NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball recognized its senior class on Tuesday night by honoring senior captain
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) prior to the start of the game. The Owls were defeated by Adelphi in a Northeast-10 matchup, 64-49.
Fantini would score six points and pull down four rebounds in her final game as an Owl and would eventually foul out of the game with 4:39 to a standing ovation.
Southern Connecticut trailed, 9-2, six minutes into the game, but had an early answer. Sparked by a
Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) triple and capped off by a
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) layup, the Owls had turned the following four minutes into a 14-9 lead.
Southern would struggle over the next 10 minutes to close out the first half as they could only account for four points during that stretch and Adelphi (14-12, 11-11 Northeast-10) would take a 27-18 lead into the break.
The Owls would get as close as seven with 13:38 to go in the game after a 10-4 run, including one of Fantini's two three-pointers on the night. However, the Panthers would follow that with an 11-0 surge to take a comfortable 52-34 lead with just over nine minutes to go in the game. Adelphi would go on to win by a final score of 64-49.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied her 10
th double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Beathea would score a team-high 13 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Stopera chipped in with 10 points of her own in the loss.
The Panthers were led by Lauren Nuss who scored 11 points in the win.
The Owls finish the season with a 7-18 record and 4-18 in Northeast-10 play.
