Owls Survive Second Half Surge And Defeat Assumption, 73-63

Southern defeated Assumption on the road Wednesday night, 73-63, in a Northeast-10 contest.

WORCESTER, Mass. – A late second half push by the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team helped fend off Assumption on Wednesday night, 73-63, in a Northeast-10 contest.
 
Southern Connecticut (6-13, 3-13 Northeast-10) would lead the entire first half, directed by senior Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) who scored 15 first half points, including three buckets from beyond the arc.

The Owls would lead, 25-17, with 4:38 remaining in the half. Started by a Moni Smith-Ocran jumper and capped off by Jackie Beathea three point play, the Owls would end the period on a 10-2 run and go into the break up, 35-19.
 
With a 15 point lead heading into the second half, the Owls would hold their double-digit lead for only the first four minutes. The Greyhounds (14-6, 11-5 Northeast-10) would score 12 of the next 14 points to cut the lead down to only four, 41-37.
 
Assumption would take its first lead of the game after Gabriel Gibson converted two free throws of her game-high 24 points to give the Greyhounds a 53-51 advantage with six minutes remaining in the game.
 
Southern would then take control of the last six minutes led by junior Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.). Smith-Ocran tallied 13 points in the second half to lift Southern on an 18-8 run to end the game and give the Owls a win on the road, 73-63.
 
Smith-Ocran scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the win, giving her eight doubles-doubles on the season. Fantini would finish with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals after a terrific first half.
 
Beathea would notch her tenth double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Owls shot 48 percent from the field, while holding Assumption to only 38 percent.
 
Southern will be back in action Saturday at Moore Field house for a 1:30 p.m. start against Saint Rose.
