Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule tonight with an 81-63 loss to Adelphi University at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Juniors Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) and Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) recorded yet another double-double for the Owls. Powell recorded 10 points, 13 rebounds and a team-high three blocks while Beathea posted a team-high 13 points and 19 rebounds.

Senior Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) contributed 11 points and two rebounds. Junior Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) and sophomore Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) tallied a team-high two assists, respectively.

Southern Connecticut led early in the first half and captured a 10-8 lead following a Beathea free throw at the 15:40 mark. Adelphi would then tie the game at 10-10, but the Owls would go on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead.

Over a two minute span with less than 10 minutes to play in the first, Adelphi went on a 10-0 spurt, which included back-to-back three's from Anh Dao Tran and Lauren Nuss. Freshman Chandler Williams (Chepachet, R.I.) ended the Panthers' run with back-to-back free throws, but the Owls entered halftime trailing the hosts, 37-29.

Adelphi would continue the lead into the second half and go up as much as 16 (51-35) with 16:53 left to play. Southern Connecticut continued to chip away at the Panthers' lead in small spurts until two made free throws from McLaughlin and a made layup from Beathea put the visitors within 13 (62-49).

It was only with about six minutes remaining in the contest when Adelphi began to pull away, 72-51. Southern Connecticut continued to battle back, but Adelphi remained ahead, 78-59, with 2:13 left. Unfortunately, it was too late for the Owls as they fell, 81-63.

The Owls fall to 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. SCSU will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they take on Post University in non-conference play.
