Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 59-52 win over Pace earlier this evening.
The Owls improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play. Pace is now 1-4 and 1-2 in league action.
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) added nine points and nine rebounds, while
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) also had nine points.
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) contributed eight points each.
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished with four points, seven assists and seven rebounds.
The Owls led by as many as 11 in the second half and held a 43-32 advantage with 10:43 remaining. However, Pace responded with a 13-2 run to even the score with 5:22 left.
SCSU went ahead for good on a layup from
Danielle Powell. Pace was about to close to within a point, 51-50, with just over two and a half minutes remaining. However, the Owls went on an 8-2 run the rest of the way to secure the win.
Pace jumped out to an 18-10 lead midway through the first half. Southern countered with a 9-0 run to take the lead and, in total, closed the half on a 19-2 spurt to carry a 29-20 advantage into halftime.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a home game against the University of the District of Columbia.
