Box Score LAKEVILLE, N.J. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Georgian Court today in non-conference action, 62-40, to extend their winning streak to six games on the year. With the win, the Owls improve to 7-4 on the season while the Lions remain winless with an 0-11 overall mark.
Seven players score at least three points for the Owls' offense while junior forward
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the offense with her eighth double-double, 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 14 rebounds, seven points, two assists, three blocks and a steal. Sophomore
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) chimed in with 14 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Junior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the Owls today in both assists (5) and steals (3).
In the opening three minutes of the game, both teams battled for the lead, 4-4, until a layup from
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) sparked an Owls' 10-0 run putting them ahead 14-4. Over the next couple of minutes, Georgian Court found themselves within three, 17-14, after a layup from Tahir Matthews with 7:09 left to play in the first.
Georgian Court kept the score to within reach, but another Owl's run put their lead back up to double-digits, 32-22, with a minute remaining in the first. The final basket of the half came from the Lions, with 34 seconds on the clock, cutting the Owls' lead to seven, 32-25, heading into halftime.
Southern Connecticut opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 38-25 lead over the hosts. Shortly after, Georgian Court brought the score to within eight, 38-30, but the Owls answered right back extending their lead to 13, 48-35, with 8:17 remaining.
For the remainder of the game, the Owls kept both their offense and defense strong ending the game on a 14-5 run.
The Owls are back in action after the holiday break when they travel to Sparkhill, N.Y. on New Years Eve to take on Saint Thomas Aquinas. Tip-off for that match-up is set for 12:30 p.m.
