Women's Basketball Defeats Assumption College, 81-71, Saturday Afternoon in NE-10 Action

WORCESTER, Mass. – Four different players recorded double-digits, including a 20-point effort from sophomore Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.), as the Southern Connecticut State University defeated Assumption College, 81-71, Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.
 
With the win, the Owls improve to 12-9 on the season and 9-4 in Northeast-10 Conference action, while the Greyhounds fall to 11-8 overall and 6-8 in the conference.
 
To go along with her 20 points, Weselyj posted two rebounds, an assists and a block. Senior guard Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) registered 19 points, a block, a steal, four assists and a rebound. Junior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) tallied 12 points and seven assists while sophomore Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) rounded out the quartet with 10 points and nine rebounds.
 
Assumption took control early opening the game with an 11-8 lead over the Owls. Shortly after, Southern Connecticut rallied back to take its first lead of the game, 18-16, after a Weselyj three-pointer at the 10:32 mark.
 
Southern Connecticut maintained the lead over the next three minutes until the Greyhounds regained their lead, 29-26. With the score tied at 29-29, both teams traded leads and remained tied, 36-36, heading into halftime.
 
The Owls finished the first half shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from the line. Hankton led the Owls in the first half with 11 points and four assists.
 
Five minutes into the second half, both teams went through two ties until the Owls took a four-point lead, 48-44. From that point on, Southern Connecticut kept its lead strong, 60-49, until Assumption brought the score to within two, 70-68, with 1:46 remaining.
 
Following an Owls' timeout with 35 seconds left on the clock, the visitors regrouped and secured the 10-point (81-71) road victory against the Greyhounds.
 
Caitlin Ackerman led Assumption offensive with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists. Kelly Conley and Jaclyn Storey chipped in with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
 
The Owls are back in action on Monday, Feb. 2 as they welcome Merrimack College to Moore Field House for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
