Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team extends its winning streak to six defeating Adelphi University, 104-93, at Moore Field House Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 action. Following today's win, the Owls improve to 19-5 on the season and 13-3 in conference play.
Along with the 25 points, Smith recorded a team-high eight rebounds, a team-high seven assists and two steals. Senior
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) chipped in with 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 3-of-8 shooting from long range. He also recorded a team-high eight rebounds, two steals, a block and a steal. Sophomore
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) contributed 21 of the Owls' 33 bench points as well as tallied two rebounds and a team-high four steals. Junior
Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals.
Adelphi took control early in the first with a 7-6 lead, until a four-point play from Houston, at the 16:59 mark, put the Owls ahead by three, 10-7. Following four ties, Southern Conn. continued to lead the Panthers, 29-25, before a layup from Houston sparked an 11-0 run to put the Owls ahead, 40-27, with 8:21 remaining.
Not long after, a layup by Adelphi cut the Owls' lead to six, before a dunk from sophomore
Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.) at the 4:49 mark put the Owls back up to 10, 47-37. For the remainder of the half, Southern Conn. maintained its double-digit lead, 66-50, heading into halftime.
In the first half, the Owls posted 32 points in the paint while tallied 19 bench points and 14 points off Adelphi turnovers. Southern Conn. shot 66.7 percent (26-of-39) from the field as well as went 9-of-16 (56.3%) from behind the arc.
For most of the second half, Southern Conn. kept its lead above 15 until a three-pointer from Adelphi brought the score to 13, 76-63, with 12:55 remaining. Over the next four minutes of play, the Owls took its biggest lead of the game of 21, 88-67, after a Mallory layup from junior
Jack McCarthy (Wallingford, Conn.).
With less than three minutes to play, Adelphi came storming back to cut the Owls' lead to 10, 94-84, but Southern Conn. wouldn't let them back within ten for the remainder of the game. Southern Conn. finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the line.
The Owls will return to Moore Field House on Monday afternoon as the team will host Merrimack College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
