RINDGE, N.H. – Despite a career-high 25 points from senior forward
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 72-58, in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon. Following the loss, the Owls are now 13-7 on the season and 6-6 in league play while the Ravens pick up the win and improve to 10-7 overall and 7-5 in the NE-10.
Along with the 25 points, Powell chipped in with seven rebounds and an assist. Senior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) was the only other Owl to score in double-digits with 12 points while registering nine rebounds, an assist, four steals and a block.
Southern Connecticut took control early in the first quarter with a 5-0 lead just a 1:50 in. Franklin Pierce kept within reach of the Owls, 12-7, until a 7-0 run gave the hosts their first lead of the game, 14-12, with 3:41 remaining. Southern Connecticut managed to regain the lead, but at the 58 second mark Jasmyne Fogle tied the game at 19-19 after a deep three. Fogle's three would be the final basket of the period for both teams.
Franklin Pierce controlled the majority of the second period outscoring the Owls 16-11. During the first three minutes of the quarter, Southern Connecticut kept within arms reach until the 5:41 mark where Alison Palma put the Ravens up five, 26-21. The Owls found themselves within one, 31-30, following a 9-5 run, but the Ravens would hold a 35-30 lead at halftime.
At halftime, both Southern Connecticut and Franklin Pierce were equally matched in the stats as both teams recorded 17 total rebounds. Franklin Pierce held the Owls to only 41.4 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the mark while the Owls held the Ravens to 46.2 percent shooting from the floor and 38.5 percent shooting from three-point range.
Five minutes into the third quarter, Southern Connecticut brought the score to within six, 42-36, thanks to a made layup from
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.). Franklin Pierce retaliated back with a 15-point lead, 51-36, before a 9-0 run brought the Owls to within six, 51-45. But, Franklin Pierce would lead 52-45 entering the fourth and final quarter.
Southern Connecticut could only play catch-up in the four quarter as the visitors saw Franklin Pierce's lead grow to 14 over the last 10 minutes of play. The Owls battled back to within nine, 60-51, at the 4:17 mark, but was unable to come any closer to the Ravens.
The Owls are back in action on Jan. 26 against Assumption College. Tip-off 5:30 p.m.
