Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team registered her second-straight double-double of the season, 15 points and 14 rebounds, as the Owls came up short, 68-67, on Sunday evening against the University of Bridgeport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down by six, 65-59, with 23 seconds left in regulation, Southern Connecticut rallied together a 5-3 run to bring the score to within four, 68-64, before a deep three from
Murphy Murad (Storrs, Conn.) cut the hosts' lead to one, 68-67. However, the buzzer sounded and the Owls' rally came to an end.
Bridgeport opened the game with a 13-5 run until a deep three from
Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) brought the Owls to within two, 15-13. The Purple Knights managed to maintain their lead, 24-19, heading into the next quarter.
Over the 20 minutes, the Owls could only play catch-up as Bridgeport kept its lead to above double-digits and the closest the Owls got was within six, 52-46, at the 14 second mark, in the third quarter, following a made jumper from McLaughlin.
STAT BREAKDOWN
- Senior Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Mass.) led the offensive charge with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.
- Along with her double-double, McLaughlin collected two assists and two steals.
- Freshman Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points.
TEAM BREAKDOWN
- Southern Connecticut finished the game shooting 32.9 percent (25-of-76) from the floor while shooting only 41.2 percent from long range and 60 percent from the line.
- The Owls' held a 13-9 edge over the Purple Knights in points off turnovers as well as a 18-16 edge in bench points.
