NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell in its home opener to Southwest Division foe Adelphi University, 66-50, on Wednesday evening at Moore Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Connecticut came off the bench hot, controlling the first nine minutes of the game, until Adelphi battled back taking a 17-14 lead heading into the second quarter. The Owls kept within reach of the Panthers, cutting their lead to within one, 25-24, following a layup up from freshman
Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.). However, the Owls would trail the visitors 32-29 at the half.
Adelphi continued to tack on the points as the visitors lead went from single digits to double digits over the final half of play. Southern Connecticut's only threat of the half came at the 7:29 mark, in the third quarter, as senior
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) brought the score to within two, 34-32.
STAT BREAKDOWN
- Senior Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) registered her third straight double-double, 22 points and 16 rebounds, as well as tallied two steals, a block and an assist.
- Senior Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, two assists, a steal and four rebounds.

- The Owls finished the evening shooting 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the floor , 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from long range and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the line.
- Both Southern Connecticut and Adelphi finished the evening with 10 assists as well as six steals.

Southern Connecticut returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 19 against the District of Columbia. The non-conference game will be played at 1:30 p.m. at the University of Bridgeport.
