NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team outscored its opponent by 40+ points as the Owls defeated Dominican (N.Y.) College 79-36 in a non-conference showdown on Thursday afternoon at Moore Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Connecticut took control of the game as the Owls entered a Charger timeout leading 15-6, following a made three from
Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) at the 3:00 mark.
Southern Connecticut closed out the first with an eight-point, 21-13, lead before Dominican battled back to within five, 24-19, after a made basket from Sarah Ismail with 3:49 left in the second. The Chargers' threat didn't stop the hosts as the Owls closed out the half with a 13-4 run.
For the remaining 20 minutes of regulation, Southern Connecticut shut down Dominican's chances for a comeback by forcing 11 turnovers and allowing them to score only one point in the fourth.
FIRST HALF STATS
- Southern Connecticut shot a combined 37.1 percent from the floor while both Hurlbert and Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) scored a team-high nine points a piece.
- In the second quarter, Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) recorded her second career block as an Owl.
- All eight players who played in the first scored for the hosts.

- Southern Connecticut outshot the Chargers in the second half 25-1.
- Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) set a new career-high in points as she scored all her seven points for the Owls in the second.
- The Owls' bench outscored Dominican's bench 21-4.
- Alyssa Irons scored her first point as an Owl off a three-pointer at the 1:17 mark in the fourth.
FINAL STATS
- Southern Connecticut set a new season-high in three-point field goals with 19 and in three-point field goal attempts with 38.
- The Owls held Chargers without field goal for final 13:58 of the game, the fewest points allowed in 16-17.
- Twelve different players registered at least two points in the Owls win.
