NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite a career-high 21 points from freshman Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 65-60 decision to Merrimack on Tuesday evening at Moore Field House.

Steinauer also matched a career-high with eight rebounds in the contest and connected on all 14 free throw attempts that she had on the night. Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) added 13 points and seven rebounds. Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) also reached double digits with 10 points and added nine rebounds.

LATE RUN FALLS JUST SHORT: Merrimack led 49-38 going into the final quarter, but the Owls used a 13-2 run to close the deficit to just a point, 52-51 with 4:58 after a three-pointer from Steinauer. The Warriors scored the next four points before Steinauer hit two free throws, but Southern wouldn't get as close as three the rest of the way.

LEADING FROM THE OUTSET: Merrimack scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed in the contest. The Owls were down half a dozen at the end of the opening quarter. The Warriors stretched the lead to nine at the break and 11 after three frames before Southern made its late run.
