GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – For the second game in a row, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team had an opportunity to claim a victory on the final shot of regulation. Unfortunately, the Owls came up one point short in an 87-86 loss at Adelphi earlier today.

Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) scored 31points and added eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Toby Christensen (Gentofte, Denmark) contributed 17 points and seven boards for the Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Owls trailed for most of the opening half. The game was tied at 15 just about five minutes in before Adelphi surged ahead. The Owls pulled back in front at 30-29 and 32-31, but Adelphi didn't trail for the final 7:22 of the half. The Panthers built a nine-point lead late in the half and took a 52-45 lead into the break.

Southern rallied in the second half, tying the game at 70 with 9:58 left on a Christensen hoop. His three-pointer just over a minute later gave the Owls a 75-74 lead. Adelphi scored the next five points and took the lead for good, but the Owls hung around. A three-pointer from McLeod closed the gap to 87-86 with just under a minute left. SCSU then forced a missed shot and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but the shot hit off the side of the rim.
