Football Falls To Pace In Overtime, 14-7

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Pace, 14-7 in overtime, in a Northeast 10 Conference match-up at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville, N.Y. With the loss, SCSU drops to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the NE10 while Pace improves to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Eli Parks (Bristol, Conn.) ran for 146 yards on 31 carries, and also had 21 yards in the air for 167 all-purpose yards. Hunter Fluegel (New Bedford, Mass.) scored the Owls' lone points of the day on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Matt Sanzaro (Wethersfield, Conn.), who was 8-for-16 for 127 yards.

Defensively, Rashaad Pierre (Bronx, N.Y.) had seven tackles, including six solo and two for a loss and a sack, while Brian Pelzer (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) also recorded seven tackles. Jarrod Bennett-Moorer (Bronx, N.Y.) had four tackles and a sack.

SCORING
  • 1:43, 1st (Pace 7, SCSU 0): Antonio Giannico scored the game's first points on a 19-yard run, followed by a Pat Davis extra point that gave the Setters a 7-0 lead.
  • 1:15, 3rd (SCSU 7, Pace 7): Hunter Fluegel shrugged off a defender, beating his man to the end zone where Matt Sanzaro delivered a strike for a 24-yard touchdown reception. After SCSU was called for a penalty at the end of the play, Jose Conde ( ) drilled a 35-yard point-after attempt to tie the game at 7-7.
  • OT (Pace 14, SCSU 7): Pace quarterback Dan Anerella floated a 24-yard pass to the middle of the Setters' end zone to the out-stretched hands of Brian Dolan to give Pace a 14-7 lead.

NOTES
  • Parks' 146 yards on the ground gives the NE10's top rusher his third-straight game with 140-plus yards, and his fourth such game in his last five outings.
  • His 167 all-purpose yards were his second-most of the season behind his 183-yard day against AIC.
  • Parks now has 1,013 rushing yards for the year, and becomes the Owls' first 1,000-yard rusher since John Moscatel in 2013.
  • His 1,013 yards give the Owls their 12th 1,000-yard rusher since SCSU joined the NE10 in 1998, and place him 44th in single-season yards in NE10 history.
  • Fluegel's third touchdown of the season leads all Owls' receivers. It was his first touchdown since the Owls' win against Saint Anselm on Sept. 29.
  • Bennett-Moorer is now second in the Owls' line-up with 45 tackles for the year, while his eight sacks lead SCSU. He has 4.5 sacks in his last two games.
  • Pace's 225 yards for the day were the fewest allowed by SCSU this season.

Southern Connecticut State will host LIU Post on Saturday, Nov. 3 for its final home game of the season, with Senior Day festivities to be held prior to kick-off.
