Trio Leads Owls Past Le Moyne, 65-63

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The trio of senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.), juniors Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) and Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) led the charge as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated NE10 foe, Le Moyne this afternoon, 65-63 at Moore Field House.

Notable Facts
  • Tonight's 21 point, 14 rebound performance marked Steinauer's fourth straight double-double this year. She also tied her career-best in steals with five.
  • Pfohl topped her career-best in points with 17 and led the Owls from the three-point line (5-for-7) right in front of Fressle who was 3-for-6 from the 3-point line. Fressle, who has been solid for the Owls, topped her career-best in steals with four on the night.

FIRST QUARTER
  • It was a neck-and-neck affair in the first as both squads traded points in a quarter where neither team led by more than five points and the score was tied four separate times. 

SECOND QUARTER
  • The Owls went on a 14-5 run to start the second quarter. Six of the Owls 14 points in that span came from the hands of Pfohl. Southern prospered in this frame allowing them to take a seven-point lead heading into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Le Moyne kicked up their offense a few notches as they went on a 10-0 run to begin the third frame and eventually tied it at 38 with 1:38 remaining.
  • The Dolphins added three quick points late and held a one point lead at the end of the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Southern's offense exploded the final frame as they scored their highest point total in a quarter with 27 points. 
  • A quarter that was controlled by the Dolphins in the beginning took a quick turn as Southern found their footing and a neck-and-neck battle ensued once again.
  • Le Moyne would break the tie before senior Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) was fouled and tied it back up once she took her turn at the charity stripe. Fressle stepped in and knocked down an important three-pointer at 5:23 before Pfohl hit two back-to-back three-pointers and pushed the Owls lead, 58-49.
  • The Dolphins weren't giving up as they counterattacked with an 8-0 run in the next minute and a half to come within three points of the Owls lead. With 16 seconds remaining, Le Moyne's Liz Millea knocked down a good three-pointer to put them within two. 
  • Steinauer was fouled and was given two free throws, which she successfully knocked down, but Le Moyne was awarded three shots after a foul, where McKayla Roberts, the Dolphins speedy guard landed them all and put them within one of the Owls with eight seconds remaining.
  • Fressle earned herself a turn on the line as she knocked down a free throw to put the Owls up by two with five seconds remaining.
  • Southern was able to ward off the Dolphins and capture their fourth straight victory, second straight conference victory, 65-63 against NE10 foe, Le Moyne.

Following the holiday break, the Owls will travel to Flushing, N.Y. to face Queens College on November 25 for a 3:30 p.m. showing with the Knights.
