Owls Drop 76-71 Decision To Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. -  The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 76-71 contest to Assumption College. The Greyhounds improved to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in the NE10, while the Owls fall to 12-9 overall and 6-7 in the NE10. 
 
Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) tallied her NCAA Division II-leading 16th double-double of the season with 30 points and 11 rebounds with five steals and two assists. Junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) totaled 15 points, a team-high eight assists and four steals. Senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) finished the game with 20 points, while shooting 40% (6-for-15) from the three-point line.
 
1st QUARTER (ASM 16, SCSU 12)
•The Greyhounds took an early 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game.
• The Owls chipped away at Assumption's lead to come within four by the end of the frame.
 
2ND QUARTER (ASM 30, SCSU 31)
• Southern opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to tie the game at 24-24.
• Steinauer scored 14 of her 30 points in the second quarter after converting 6-of-9 from the field.

3RD QUARTER (ASM 55, SCSU 49)
• The Greyhounds went on a 13-4 run midway through the third quarter to take a 51-42 lead. Southern countered with a 7-1 run to come within three of the host, but a three-pointer at the buzzer gave Assumption a 55-49 lead heading into the final frame.
 
4TH QUARTER (ASM 76, SCSU 71)
• With the Owls trailing, 66-51 at the 5:52 mark, Southern went on a 20-6 run to cut the Greyhounds lead down to one with six seconds left in the game, 72-71. However, a perfect free throw performance from the host sealed the 76-71 win over the Owls.

FACTS
Kiana Steinauer collected her conference and NCAA DII-leading 16th double-double of the year with 30 points and 11 rebounds.
• This is Steinauer's second 30-point game this season.
• 
Amanda Pfohl notched 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc, which has her collecting double-digit points in 19 of the Owls 21 games this season.
• For the 12th-straight game, the Owls had three-or-more players score in double-digit figures: Steinauer (30), Pfohl (20) and Wheeler (15).
 
UP NEXT
The Owls are set to travel to Colchester, Vt. the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College. The game is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
