Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Downs Queens, 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated Queens, 2-0, in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improve to 5-2-1 overall while Queens drops to 5-4-0 on the season. The Owls also improve to 3-0-1 in non-conference games this season.

Meaghan Kelley (East Brookfield, Mass.) and Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.) both scored for the Owls while Paula Nunez Escobar (Basque Country, Spain) picked up her first assist of the season on D'Amico's goal. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) had four saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kelley put the Owls on the board in the 24th minute of play when she collected a loose ball on the far side of the field and blasted a shot from outside the box to the opposite top corner.
  • Midway through the second half, Nunez Escobar sent a beautiful cross into the box for D'Amico who headed a shot on goal. Queens keeper Shenae Kreps stopped the header, but D'Amico pounced on the rebound and blasted it into the goal to give the Owls a two-goal lead.
NOTES
  • Kelley's goal was her second of the season, and first since the Owls' matchup against nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce. Kelley joins D'Amico, Johanna Wahlen and Rossella Graniero to give the Owls four multiple-goal scorers.
  • D'Amico's goal came after she was denied on the first five shots-on-goal until she finally broke through. D'Amico currently leads the team with three goals and seven points to date.
  • Allie Smith improves to 5-2-1 on the year with a 0.96 goals-against average and four shutouts.
  • As a team, the Owls outshot Queens 15-5 overall and 9-4 on targets on goal.
  • The Owls' victory marks the eighth-straight game in which the Owls have held their opponent without a first half goal.
NOTES
Southern returns to action when it takes on Le Moyne in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Syracuse, N.Y. at 11 a.m.
