Women's Soccer Defeats New Haven, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated University of New Haven, 2-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improve to 8-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the Northeast 10 while New Haven drops to 4-9-1 overall and 3-7-0 in conference play.

Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.) and Nadine Hilkert (Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) both scored for the Owls, with Hilkert's game-winner coming on a pass from Kelly Lamb (Ledyard, Conn.) with the assist. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) stopped five of the Chargers' six shots-on-goal in regulation in the Owls' win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After both teams played to a scoreless tie through halftime, D'Amico took control and put the Owls on the board in the 58th minute. The second-year attacker dribbled to the top of the box and blasted a shot to the opposite corner, beating New Haven's keeper top-shelf to give Southern a 1-0 lead.
  • With 14 minutes to play, New Haven's Mackenzie Myers scored the equalizer on a pass from Samantha Roth to knot the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute.
  • In the closing minutes, Lamb took a feed at midfield and sent a pass into the box. Hilkert stepped between a pair of New Haven defenders and headed the ball in the goal to give the Owls a 2-1 lead with less than three minutes to play.

NOTES
  • D'Amico's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season, as she now has three goals in her last seven games.
