Women's Soccer Defeats AIC, 1-0, To Advance To NE10 Championship Game

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 7 Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated No. 6 American International College, 1-0, in a Northeast 10 Conference Championship Semifinal matchup in Springfield, Mass. Southern advances to the NE10 Championship Game for the second time in program history.

Paula Nunez (Basque Country, Spain) scored late in the first half off an assist from Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.). Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) stopped all five of AIC's shots-on-goal for her ninth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With just under 14 minutes to play in the first half, Allie Smith sent a booming kick from the box to midfield where Johanna Wahlen was able to take control. Wahlen stepped around a defender and fed Kaitlyn D'Amico on the right flank. D'Amico walked around her defender, carried the ball to the middle of the field and a sent a pass to the opposite wing for Paula Nunez. Nunez blew past a Yellow Jackets defender and then blasted a shot past AIC's keeper to put the Owls in front, 1-0.

NOTES
  • Nunez's goal is her second of the season, and second in her last three games. Nunez scored against Stonehill in the Owls' season finale to clinch a spot in the NE10 tournament.
  • Nunez now has two goals and one assist for the season.
  • D'Amico's assist is her second of the season and pushes her team-leading point total to 12 to date.
  • The game was also Allie Smith's ninth shutout of the season, and the most in a single-season since Katie DiDio had 10 in 2008. Smith's nine shutouts are the fourth-most in program history, passing Shannon Mason's eight shutouts in 2000.
  • With the win against AIC, Southern improves to 14-7-2 all-time against the Yellow Jackets.
  • With the win, Southern advances to the Northeast 10 Championship Game for the second time in program history and the first time since 2000.
