Paula Nunez Scores In 1-1 Tie At Stonehill To Clinch NE10 Tournament Berth

EASTON, Mass. – Paula Nunez (Basque Country, Spain) scored the game-tying goal with thirty-seven seconds remaining in regulation to help the Southern Connecticut women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie at Stonehill and clinch a berth in the upcoming Northeast 10 Conference tournament. With the tie, the Owls end the regular season at 5-4-4 in conference play for 19 points in the conference standings. The Owls can finish as high as sixth and as low as eighth in the conference standings.

Despite giving up the marker to Stonehill, Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) was brilliant in goal, stopping 14 of the Skyhawks' 15 shots-on-goal. The lone goal allowed could easily be blamed on the steady rain creating a slick playing surface as the ball appeared to slip out of her hands after making an initial save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stonehill struck first when Alex Giardina put the Skyhawks out in front in the 29th minute of play. Nicole Geraghty put a shot on goal that Smith smothered. The ball slipped loose when Giardina was able to get a foot on it and slide it past Smith for the lead.
  • With seconds remaining in regulation, Nadine Hilkert played a free kick to the opposite post where Paula Nunez muscled her way past a pair of Skyhawks defenders and redirected the pass into the back of the Skyhawks' goal to send the game to overtime.

NOTES
  • Nunez saved her first goal of the year for perhaps the most important moment of the Owls' season. With a loss, the Owls' season would have ended, but a tie sends them to the NE10 Tournament.
  • Hilkert picked up her second assist of the season on Nunez's goal. Her two goals and two assists on the year all came in the Owls' last six games.
  • With the tie, Southern denied Stonehill a regular season championship and the top seed in the upcoming tournament.
