Volleyball Defeats New Haven in Five-Set Frenzy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated the University of New Haven for the first time since 2015, 3-2 at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls improve to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers fall to 14-8 overall and 6-3 in the NE10.

Prior to the start of the Owls match against the Chargers, the Southern Connecticut volleyball team honored the life and memory of SCSU volleyball alum, Madison Featherston '15, who passed away unexpectedly on May 21, 2019 by presenting her jersey to her parents, Laura and Mark.
 
Four Owls broke career-highs including a program record as Anna Venard (Thornton, Colo.), Tea Carter (Modesto, Calif), Ella White (Gurnee, Ill.) and Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) all topped career-bests. Venard broke the SCSU volleyball single-game program record for digs and topped her career-best with 37, while also chipping in two service aces and two assists. Carter broke her career-high assists with 52 adding 14 digs and three block assists. White broke her career-high in kills notching 19 and adding six digs and one block assist. Gaibur tallied a career-high 24 digs, while adding 10 kills and a block.

Player Notes
  • Anna Venard's 37 digs are a SCSU volleyball program record and a career-high. The previous program record was set by Vanessa Sullivan against Philadelphia on Oct. 15, 2011 when she had 35. Venard's previous career-high was set on Sept. 25, 2016 against LIU Post when she has 29 digs. It also marks her ninth-straight match with double-digit digs and the 22nd match this season.
  • Tea Carter's 52 assists against New Haven are a career-high, a feat she has broken three times in her last four games. Her previous career-high was 51 assists against Saint Anselm on Nov. 2. Her 52 assists against UNH also make it the 18th game this season with 30-or-more assists and in 12 of her last 13 games. Carter's 52 assists and 14 digs was her seventh double-double of the year.
  • Gabriela Gaibur's 24 digs was a career-high. Her previous career-high was 19 against Adelphi on Oct. 29. She also tallied 10 kills against New Haven, making it a fifth-straight game that she has been in double-digit kills. Her 24 digs and 10 kills make it her fourth double-double in five games.
  • Ella White tallied a career-high 19 kills. Her previous career-high was 15 kills against Saint Anselm on Nov 2.
  • Abigail Epstein tied a career-high 15 kills and registered four blocks. She has tallied three-or-more blocks in 12 games this season.
 
Game Notes
  • This was the first time since 2015 that SCSU has defeated UNH. The Owls have fallen in the past five outings including meetings in the NE10 Tournament and NCAA Tournament in 2017.
  • This was the first time this season that the Owls have played a five-set match.
  • The last time five players had double-digit digs was on Oct. 19, 2018 against Stonehill - Jillian Chambers (18), Leanna Jadus (13), Alyssa Gage (12), Gabriela Vazquez (11) and Jennifer Dawson (10).
  • The last time three players had 20 or more digs was on Sept. 30, 2017 against NYIT – Gabriela Vazquez (31), Leanna Jadus (26) and Anna Venard (20).
