Women's Basketball Defeats Chestnut Hill, 65-59

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Chestnut Hill College, 68-59 at Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 6-4 overall, while the Griffins fall to 3-6 overall.
 
Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) scored a team-high 21 points, while adding seven rebounds, two assists and a steal shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior Ednaija Lassiter (Boston, Mass.) collected her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds, both career-highs. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) added 14 points, a career-high seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

How It Happened
  • Southern opened the first quarter on a 7-0 run behind two jumpers from Kellner and a Lassiter three-pointer. Chestnut Hill found their offense as they went on a 9-2 run over a two-minute span that tied the game. The Owls briefly regained the lead, but the Griffins finished the quarter up by three.
  • Chestnut Hill extended their lead to 21-14 with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter. Southern ended the half on a 12-4 run, capped by a Lassiter three-pointer, to take a 26-21 lead into halftime.
  • Southern outscored Chestnut Hill 19-10 to start the third quarter to take a 45-35 lead with 3:47 remaining. Wheeler and Boston combined for 11 of Southern' s 19 points. Chestnut Hill responded by ending the quarter on an 8-0 run to end the half to cut Southern's lead to 45-34.
  • Chestnut Hill took a 50-47 lead with 7:28 to go, but Southern went on a 13-2 run to take a 60-52 lead with 2:25 remaining. Fressle had seven points during the run, including the go-ahead jumper to put the Owls up 52-50. 
  • Southern went 6-6 from the free throw line, during the final minute of play to ice the Owls' victory.  
 
Notes
  • Ednaija Lassiter collected her first career double-double as an Owl with 16 points and 14 rebounds, both of which were career-highs. Both of her career-highs were set against Saint Rose on Dec. 10 when she collected 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Seven rebounds are a career-high for Imani Wheeler. Her previous career-high was set on Dec. 4, 2018 against American International and was tied on three occasions during the 2018-19 season.
  • This was Jessica Fressle's second-straight 20-point game and fourth of the season.
  • The Owls 12 made three-pointers is a season-high. Their previous season-high was 11 against Bloomfield on Nov. 11.
  • Southern's 45 team rebounds ties their single-game team total this season. They had 45 rebounds against the District of Columbia on Nov. 16.
  • SCSU notched their second highest single-game assist total collecting 19 against Chestnut Hill. Their single-game high is currently 22 assists set against Bloomfield on Nov. 10.
  • The Owls' 40 three-point attempts were the most in a single game since Dec. 29, 2016 when they attempted 28 against Dominican.
