Owls Fall to Merrimack in Opening Round of NE10 Play

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball squad fell to Merrimack College, 75-62, at Hammel Court in the opening round of the 2019 Northeast 10 Conference Tournament. The Owls finish the season at 14-15 overall and 8-13 in the NE10, while the Warriors improve to 20-9 overall and 13-9 in the NE10.
 
Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her 24th double-double of the year with 21 points and 17 rebounds, while adding three assists and three steals. Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) notched 16 points, going 7-for-16 from the field (44%), while adding four assists. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
1st Quarter (SCS 18, MER 18)
• It was a tight scoring affair in the first quarter as both teams finished the opening ten with 18 points apiece.
• Steinauer collected five first-quarter rebounds along with seven points, while Wheeler collected six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
 
2nd Quarter (SCS 36, MER 32)
• The second quarter featured another tight scoring margin as the Owls narrowly outscored the Warriors 18-14. Southern went into halftime with a four-point lead.
• Steinauer tallied nine points, six rebounds and two steals in the second frame.
 
3rd Quarter (MER 52, SCS 47)
• Merrimack opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to take the lead, eventually outscoring Southern 20-11.
• Smith collected six of her eventual 14 points in the third frame.
 
4th Quarter (MER 72, SCS 62)
• The Warriors continued their offensive surge in the final quarter as they outscored the Owls 23-15.
• Merrimack's second half push proved to be the difference-maker as they took the 75-62 victory at Hammel Court.
 
Facts
Kiana Steinauer notched her NCAA Division II and conference-leading 24th double-double of the year with 21 points and 17 rebounds.
Imani Wheeler collected her 16th double-digit point game tonight with 16 tonight.
Amanda Pfohl's three-pointer tonight put her at 99 this season, extending her all-time single season record by nine three-pointers.
