Owls Fall To Post

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped two games to Post University in non-conference play, 4-2 and 10-9, at Pelz Field in New Haven. The Owls drop to 6-28 overall, while the Eagles improve to 14-15 overall.
 
Junior Maria Zecena (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-for-2 including a double in game one, while sophomore Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) went 1-for-4 including a double and a RBI.
 
Sophomore Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) went 1-for-3 including a triple with four RBI and one run scored in game two. Junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) collected a RBI and scored two runs, while Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
Game 1 – (Post 4, Southern Connecticut 2)
  • After a scoreless two innings, Post broke the deadlock, scoring off a Leyri Rivera RBI single up the middle. The Eagles went on to score three more runs off two hits in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Zubia got the Owls offense rolling, doubling down the left field line to bring home Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.), 4-1. The next play, a passed ball allowed Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) to squeak home and cut the Eagles lead in half, 4-2.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched all seven innings, striking out two in 28 batters faced.
 
 
Game 2 – (Post 10, Southern Connecticut 9)
  • Post hopped out the gates early scoring five quick runs off three hits in the opening inning of play. Southern counterattacked with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two back-to-back walks allowed the Owls two cut the Eagles deficit to three runs before Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) scored on the tag-up from a fly-out to center field.
  • The Eagles added their sixth run of the game with RBI single, with the batter being thrown out at second to close out the inning, 6-3.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning, Post added three runs off two hits to extend their lead to six, 9-3.
  • Delaporta blasted a three RBI triple to right center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Owls within one run. Kelsey White (Middletown, Conn.) reached on an error to score Delaporta and tie the game.
  • Post was able to collect their 10th run in the top of the seventh inning and the Owls were unable capitalize in the bottom half of the inning allowing the Eagles to capture the game two victory.
 
Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto has tallied 20 stolen bases through 34 games this season and moves into second place all-time in SCSU history for single-season stolen bases.
  • Bacoulis had her six-game hitting streak snapped in game one.
  • Game one was Jazmyn Martinez's 10th complete game pitched this season, surpassing her freshman year season total, where she pitched five games of seven-or-more innings.
 
Up Next
The Owls are set to host Le Moyne for back-to-back days of doubleheaders on Saturday for senior day and Sunday for their "Hope Happens Here" game.
