NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 doubleheader against American International College, losing the first game, 4-1, before taking the second game, 16-7. The Owls now sit at 16-22 overall, 7-11 in the NE10 and 5-6 in the NE10 Southwest Division while the Yellow Jackets are now 15-17 overall, 8-9 in the NE10 and 6-3 in the division.
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored in each game, while he also stroked a triple to lead-off the nightcap.
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) drove in Palmer with the first game's only run before going 3-for-5 with two doubles, four stolen bases and four runs scored in the second half of the twin bill.
Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in the second game while
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and
Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) both drove in three runs.
On the mound,
Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) picked up the win in relief in the second game after holding AIC scoreless on two hits while striking out six over 3 1/3.
Joe Nemchek (Simsbury, Conn.) got the start in the second game where he recorded the first seven outs by strikeout. He gave up four runs – three earned – on three hits while striking out nine over 3 2/3 before giving the ball to Henry.
Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) was lights-out for seven innings, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless on one hit while striking out 10 in the first game before AIC was able to get to the Owls' bullpen.
GAME 1 (AIC 4, SCSU 1)
- In the bottom of the 1st, Palmer singled to start the game before stealing second. Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) then hit a ground ball to short to move Palmer to third before Lamberti's fly ball to right scored Palmer and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
- After pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 1st, Rossomando cruised through the AIC line-up, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Josh Aviles hit a soft liner through the Owls' infield for AIC's first hit of the day.
- Rossomando enduced a doubleplay to end the fifth, and then retired the last six batters he faced.
- AIC took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth before tacking on another run in the ninth.
GAME 2 (SCSU 16, AIC 7)
- In the bottom of the 1st, Palmer tripled to lead off the game before O'Toole drove him in with a single. After O'Toole was put out on an attempted double play, in which Lamberti reached, he quickly stole second, and then third with two outs. After Redahan walked, he got caught in a broken rundown that allowed Lamberti to score to push SCSU's lead to 2-0.
- AIC chipped away to tie it with a run in the 2nd and 3rd. In the bottom of the 3rd, Lamberti led off with a double before Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. Redahan then lined a single through the right side of the infield to score Lamberti from second. DeMartino's ground ball to first moved both runners into scoring position before Finnegan blasted a double to right center to score both runs. Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) then placed a line drive down the right field line for a triple to bring around Finnegan. Cloutier then stole home to push Southern's lead to 7-2.
- AIC threw two more runs on the board to cut the Owls' lead to three, 7-4, before Southern responded with a three-run at-bat. Criscuolo was hit with a pitch for the second time followed by a double by Redahan. DeMartino then singled to center to score Criscuolo before Finnegan walked and Cloutier went down swinging. John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) then drove in Redahan with a single before DeMartino scored on a pass ball to give the Owls a 10-4 lead.
- In the fifth, Lamberti doubled to start the inning before scoring on Criscuolo's RBI single. After Redahan doubled again, Criscuolo scored on a balk.
- In the sixth, Lamberti hit a two-out single before Criscuolo walked. After Lamberti stole third, he scored on dropped fly ball before DeMartino drove in Criscuolo and Redahan to give Southern a 16-4 lead.
- AIC managed two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth.
NOTES
- Rossomando's 10 strikeouts were the most in a game for Southern since Pat Egan had 13 against Molloy on Feb. 20, 2015. The transfer from UConn now has a team-leading 58 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings pitched, giving him the most in a single-season since Egan recorded 73 in 2015.
- With four hits on the day, Palmer pushed his team-leading hit total to 51, giving him a career-best. Palmer has been on a tear for the month of April and also pushes his hitting streak to a team-leading nine games in which he is hitting .461 (18-39) with 10 runs scored.
- Lamberti capped off an incredible week with the doubleheader. Following an eight-RBI showing against New Haven on Wednesday, Apr. 16, Lamberti drove in another run in the first game. For the week, the Owls' outfielder was 7-for-14 (.500) with nine RBI, seven runs scored and four extra-base hits.
- Criscuolo saw his 15-game hitting streak come to an end in the first game, but started another one in the second game. He did, however, reach base in both games to run his streak of reaching base safely to 21 games.
- O'Toole posted his fifth multiple-hit game in his last six outings with a 2-for-6 showing in the second game, in which he also drove in a run. He's now 11 for his last 28 (.392) with nine runs scored in his last six games.
- DeMartino's three RBI's in the second game match his season-high and give him the most in 14 games after he drove in three runs against Saint Rose on Mar. 30.
- Cloutier has now driven in and scored a run in three of his last four games.
- Finnegan snapped a four-game hitless streak with two hits in the nightcap. He also leads the team with nine multiple-RBI games as well as six three-RBI games and has a team-best 32 for the year.
- Spoto currently owns a three-game hitting streak after recording a hit in all three games this week.
- Henry picks up his second decision of the season and first in seven appearances. He's now pitched 5 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three appearances with two hits allowed with nine strikeouts. For the year, he has 20 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings pitched.
- Nemchek's nine strikeouts are a season-high and gives him 25 in 29 2/3 innings pitched.
