Baseball Picks Up Crucial NE10 Southwest Division Win With 9-2 Victory Against AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team cruised to a 9-2 win against Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division foe American International College at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls have now won 2-of-3 against the Yellow Jackets and improve to 6-6 in the Southwest Division while AIC drops to 6-4. Overall, the Owls improved to 17-22 including an 8-11 mark in NE10 play while AIC drops to 15-18 with a 8-10 mark in conference action.

Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with a 4-for-5 day that including two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) were both 2-for-5 with two RBI while O'Toole also scored two runs. John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, freshman Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) improved to 5-0 on the season after holding AIC to two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 while striking out four. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings while scattering two hits and striking out four before Tiki White (New London, Conn.) pitched a hitless, scoreless ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • O'Toole and Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) singled with one out in the first inning before Redahan drove in O'Toole with the game's first run.
  • After AIC manufactured a run in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1, they took a 2-1 lead on Matthew Elliott's lead-off home run in the fourth.
  • Southern regained the lead, this time for good, in the fourth when Redahan led off the inning with a double before scoring on DeMartino's single through the right side of the infield. Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) then reached on a fielder's choice before scoring on a double by Spoto down the right field line to give the Owls a 3-2 lead.
  • In the fifth, Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) singled and then scored from first on a double to left center by Redahan. Redahan then scored on DeMartino's double to right field to give the Owls a 5-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Cloutier doubled to left center before moving to third on Spoto's single. After Spoto stole second and Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) walked to load the bases, O'Toole singled through the left side of the infield to score Spoto and Cloutier while Palmer moved to third. Palmer scored on Lamberti's ground-out to third before Redahan drove O'Toole in to give Southern a 9-2 lead.

NOTES
  • White won his fourth-straight decision to improve to 5-0 on the year. The last Southern Connecticut freshman pitcher to win four-consecutive starts was Cole Bryant in 2012.
  • White has now gone 16 1/3 consecutive innings without giving up an extra-base hit.
  • With his 2-for-4 day, Jim Palmer pushed his hitting streak to 10 games. In that span, Palmer is hitting .452 (19-42) with five RBI, 11 runs scored and five stolen bases.
  • For the year, Palmer has a team-leading 52 hits while hitting a team-high .340 with 31 rns scored, 27 RBI, 18 walks and 16 stolen bases.
  • Redahan had his first four-hit day of the season, as well as his first three-RBI game of the year. Redahan finished the series against AIC batting 7-for-10 with four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored.
  • O'Toole has enjoyed a productive two weeks in which he has recorded multiple hits in six of his last seven games played. In that span, he is hitting .394 (13-33) with five RBI and 11 runs scored.
  • Criscuolo drew a walk to extend his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 22 before picking up a single later in the game. The Owls' senior is hitting .407 (35-86) with 28 RBI, 24 runs scored with a .605 slugging percentage and a .510 on-base percentage while missing 15 games to injury.
  • DeMartino posted his second-straight multiple RBI game and now has five in his last 10 at-bats.
  • Cloutier reached base in three of his four at-bats and scored twice, giving him seven runs scored in his last five games. He now leads the team with 33 runs scored.
  • Spoto has now hit safely in four-straight games and has multiple hits in three of his last six games.
  • After a brilliant complete game shutout in his last start, Quantique White has now logged 10 consecutive innings without giving up a run.
  • In his last six appearances in which the Owls have won, White is 1-0 with four saves while holding his opponents scoreless on four hits over 17 innings with 12 strikeouts.
