WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a heartbreaker at the University of New Haven, falling to the Chargers, 2-1, at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven, Conn. With the loss, the Owls drop to 1-5 in the Northeast 10 Conference and 10-15 overall while New Haven improves to 8-9 on the year including a 2-2 mark in conference play.
Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) took the hard-luck loss again after pitching seven strong innings in defeat. Carney held the Chargers scoreless before allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Owls' southpaw hurler scattered eight hits in the game – two of which came in the eighth, while striking out five batters.
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) drove in
John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) with the Owls only run, while Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.),
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) and
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) managed the Owls' only three hits of the day. Lamberti also made two stellar plays in left field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the third, Spoto reached on an error by UNH's center field before stealing second base. Spoto then moved to second when Zambito's ground ball to short was misplayed. After Zambito stole his NE10 leading 23rd base of the season, Palmer's fly ball to right was deep enough to score Spoto to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
- Carney navigated through a first-inning jam when he gave up back-to-back, two-out hits before Lamberti made a diving catch of a foul ball down the left field line to end the New Haven threat.
- Southern Connecticut loaded the bases in the sixth and eighth innings but weren't able to push a run across.
- Carney also worked through a couple of jams, including in the seventh with runners in scoring position at second and third before getting Noah Budzik to ground back to the mound and then striking out Noah Fortuna to get out of the inning.
- In the eighth, New Haven led off with a pair of singles and then worked a walk to load the bases before Andrew Garcia crushed a single past Palmer at short to plate two runs and give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.
- New Haven then attempted a squeeze play, but the Owls were able to retire Rob Giovanelli in the run-down for the first out of the inning. The play proved important as a fly ball to left in the next at-bat could have plated another run for the Chargers. Carney struck-out the last batter he faced with a runner on second.
NOTES
- For Carney, it's his fourth-straight start in which he's allowed two or fewer runs and has now given up six earned runs over his last 29 2/3 innings pitched for a 1.82 ERA. The Owls' hurler has also struck-out 22 batters in that span while walking just four batters.
- Zambito recorded his NE10 leading 23rd stolen base in the game and now has six in his last three games. He's also reached base safely in his last seven games played.
- DeMartino also pushes his hitting streak to six games and is batting .320 (8-25) in that span.
