Zeceña Strikes Late as Owls Defeat Saint Rose in Season Finale

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad picked up the victory in their final showing of the season, stealing a 4-3 victory over the College of Saint Rose at Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany. The Owls move to 9-34 overall and 7-17 in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights drop to 14-24 overall and 7-15 in the NE10.

Maria Zeceña (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 including knocking in the game-winning RBI, while junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) also led the offensive charge for the Owls going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one RBI and one run scored. Senior Delany Turner (Leesburg, Va.) went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while pitching 5.1 innings, striking out one and collecting the victory in her final appearance in an Owl uniform. Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) popped in for 1.2 innings sealing the save with one strikeout.

Game Play
  • Jacqueline Dumont (Hudson, N.H.) opened the scoring for the Owls with a double that scored Buscetto, 1-0. The Golden Knights counterattacked with a two RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Buscetto knocked a single in the second inning to score Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) that tied the game at two apiece.
  • The fourth inning saw Saint Rose hit a solo home run to left field that broke the tie and gave them a one run lead.
  • Southern Connecticut continued their never-give-up approach that they had in their 12-7 victory a day prior. In the sixth inning, Turner was able to squeak by to score on a wild pitch and tie the game.
  • Zeceña, who had been extraordinary in the series, singled to score Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) and give the Owls the go-ahead run.
  • Stellar pitching from the sophomore Martinez allowed the Owls to seal their 4-3 victory in the series and season finale in Albany.

Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto collected her 25th and 26th stolen bases of the year. She has extended her first-place lead in SCSU single-season stolen bases by four. With her 23rd stolen base last week, she surpassed Megan Caporossi, who had 22 in 2009, for first in SCSU all-time single season stolen bases.
  • Alexa Bacoulis caps her debut season on a 10-game hitting streak, collecting at least one hit in each of the Owls last ten games. This is the longest hitting streak held by an Owl during the 2019 season.
  • Jazmyn Martinez collected her second save in the season finale. Her last save came against Saint Michael's on April 6.
