Baseball Falls To Pace, 4-0, In Regular-Season Finale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost to Pace, 4-0, in the Owls' final regular-season game of the 2019 season at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. The Owls drop to 19-26 overall and 10-15 in the Northeast 10 as well as 8-10 in the NE10 Southwest division. Southern will await the results of the remaining NE10 Southwest Division games this weekend to learn their postseason fate.

Southern's season rests on American International's performance against Pace this weekend, as a Setter sweep would result in the Owls and Yellow Jackets tied for fourth place in the division standings, with the Owls winning the tiebreaker after taking 2-of-3 against AIC earlier this month.

Against the Setters, Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 in the game while Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.), Conor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) also collected hits.

On the mound, Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings of work before Quantique White (New London, Conn.) came on in relief. White allowed two runs over four innings while striking out five. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) silenced the Setters over the next three innings, while scattering five hits, before Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) pitched the final 2/3 of the 9th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pace opened the second inning with four straight hits to plate a run before a single by Michael Salmonese drove in John Scotto to give the Setters a 2-0 lead.
  • With White pitching, he held Pace scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Setters loaded the bases and pushed a run across.
  • The Setters scored once more when Joseph Curcio doubled in the top of the sixth before scoring from second on a single by Salmonese.

NOTES
  • With two hits on the day, Palmer wraps up the regular season with a team-leading 60 hits and becomes the first player since Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) in 2016 to record 60 hits in a season.
