Volleyball Defeats Post, Falls To Bridgeport

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team split a pair of games to conclude the Post Eagles Invitational with a 3-0 loss to the University of Bridgeport and a 3-1 win over host Post University. The Owls move to 7-1 overall, while Bridgeport improves to 6-0 and Post drops to 0-10.

SCSU's six-game winning streak was snapped in its opening match against Bridgeport, but the Owls bounced back in game two behind the dominant play of junior duo Ariel Letcher (Sebastian, Fla.) and Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.), freshman Ella White (Gurnee, Ill.) and senior Tea Carter (Modesto, Calif.) to defeat host, Post in four sets.

  • Despite out-attacking Bridgeport 104-93, SCSU was unable to find their groove against the Purple Knights.
  • White continued to be a bright spot for the Owls leading the offense in kills for the third-straight game with nine against Bridgeport.
  • Carter's solid play continued as she collected 13 assists, while freshman Megan Dombrowski (Valencia, Calif.) got the nod making her SCSU debut with 11 assists.
  • Letcher chipped in seven assists and seven digs through three sets, while senior Anna Venard (Thornton, Colo.) added a team-high 11 digs.

  • The Owls came out firing on all cylinders in the second game with the newcomers leading the way.
  • Letcher led the team in kills with 18 and chipped in 12 digs, two block assists and an ace, while classmate Epstein knocked down 15 kills, adding two block assists and two aces. The freshman White was third on the team in kills with 11, adding 18 digs and two block assists.
  • The setter, Carter collected a career-high 49 assists and seven digs in the win.
 
Next Up
The Owls will compete in their final tournament when they travel to East Stroudsburg, PA to face West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson, Caldwell and host East Stroudsburg. On Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21.
