Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer's Mikaela Magee Scores Game-Winner To Top Adelphi, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's soccer senior captain Mikaela Magee (New Fairfield, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winner in the 86th minute to lift the Owls to a 2-1 win against Northeast 10 opponent Adelphi at Jess Dow Field. With the win, Southern improves to 3-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the NE10 while Adelphi drops to 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Greta Brunello (Carisolo, Italy) also scored for Southern, while Johanna Wahlen (Karlsruhe, Germany) and Meaghan Kelley (East Brookfield, Mass.) both picked up assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brunello broke a scoreless tie in the 26th minute after the Owls found themselves on a breakaway which was capped off by a beautiful pass from Wahlen before Brunello blasted a shot from the left flank to the opposite top corner to put the Owls' ahead.
  • Adelphi got on the board in the 67th minute after a defensive lapse by the Owls resulted in a turnover deep in the Southern defensive end. After Adelphi's Kerianne Scorce's shot was stopped by Southern goalkeeper Allie Smith, Hailey Franco was waiting to punch in the rebound.
  • With less than four minutes to play, Nadine Hilkert (Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) sent a ball on net that Kelley attempted to head past Panthers' keeper Krista Aliscio, but was knocked down. Magee followed the play and was there to hammer it home to give the Owls the lead.
NOTES
  • The goal was Magee's first of the season and second of her career.
  • Brunello's goal was also her first of the season and third of her career.
  • After scoring against Franklin Pierce in her last outing, Kelley has now registered a point in back-to-back games.
  • Wahlen also picked up her team-best second assist of the season on Brunello's goal.
  • Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) was dominant in goal for the Owls as she recorded eight saves on nine shots-on-goal. For the year, Smith carries an .821 save percentage (23-28) and a 1.25 goals-against-average through the first four games of the season.
