Women's Soccer Blanks Bentley, 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut women's soccer team defeated Bentley, 2-0, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improve to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NE10 play while Bentley drops to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.) and Rossella Graniero (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) both scored for the Owls while Julia Alicea (Columbia, Conn.) had an assist for her first career point. In goal, Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) recorded nine saves in her third shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • D'Amico put the Owls out in front with her second goal of the season in the 26th minute of play. Rossella Graniero played the ball from the left flank to Meagan Kelley in front of the Falcons' goal, but Kelley was denied by Bentley keeper Kat Hassapis. D'Amico pushed past her defender and booted the loose ball to the back of Bentley's net to give Southern a 1-0 lead.
  • Southern took a 2-0 lead when Julia Alicea outran her defender to chase down a ball down the sideline before taking control in the corner to the left of the Bentley goal. Alicea danced around the defender and then sent a pass across the box to Graniero who spun around her defender and drilled a shot to the opposite corner to give the Owls the two-goal lead.

NOTES
  • D'Amico and Graniero become the first Owls with multiple goals this season. Graniero scored in the Owls win against Bridgeport while D'Amico also scored against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
  • Smith's 10 saves tops her previous season-, and career-high after the fifth-year senior made nine saves in her season debut against Bridgeport.
  • Smith also recorded her third shutout of the season.
