Field Hockey Falls To Bentley, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team's come-back bid against Bentley fell short in a 2-1 loss at Jess Dow Field. The Owls trailed 2-0 before a fourth-quarter goal by freshman Kaitlyn Bourque (Enfield, Conn.) got the Owls on the board. Southern drops to 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in Northeast 10 play while Bentley improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Senior goalkeeper Brianna Craft (Hamden, Conn.) turned in the performance of the season with a 23-save afternoon, a season-high for her. Craft's 23 saves are the most in NCAA Division II field hockey this season.

How It Happened
  • Bentley's Rachel Crowley scored the first goal of the game off a corner. After a flurry of shots were turned away by Craft, Crowley - also the Falcon's inserter - was waiting on the back corner for the loose ball.
  • Five minutes into the second half, Bentley's Sam Simione converted on a penalty stroke when she flipped the ball high into the left corner, which Craft narrowly missed with her stick.
  • Bourque's marker came with just under six minutes to play when she picked up a loose ball of a shot by Chloe Knight was blocked. Bourque, playing on the right flank, blast a shot from long range that beat Bentley goalie Kayleigh Vogel stick-side to end her shutout bid.

Notes
  • Craft's 23 saves are the third most of her career and the most in a single game since she stopped 26 against Merrimack on Oct. 20, 2018. Craft holds the program record for saves in a game with 27 against LIU Post in 2017.
  • Bourque's first career goal makes her the fifth player this season to score for the Owls.
  • Jana Migliaro collected the fourth defensive save of the season for the Owls, first of her career.
