Football Drops Heartbreaker To AIC, 19-13

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team dropped a heartbreaker at American International, 19-13, in a game that came down to the final play from the Yellow Jackets' goal line. With the loss, Southern drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Northeast 10 while AIC improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) made his collegiate debut, finishing the day 27-of-48 for 282 yards and two touchdown passes. First-year Owl Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.), a transfer from Assumption, caught both touchdown passes from Ostrowsky while Julian Chung (Franklin Square, N.Y.) set career-highs with 12 receptions and 137 yards. Chung's 12 receptions tie the program record for the most in a single game, matching Chris Ortiz against Central Connecticut in 1996, Tom Dyer against Stony Brook in 2000 and Marcus Gauthier against Bryant in 2005.

Defensively, Rich Souffrant (Stratford, Conn.) led the Owls with eight tackles while Hasan Dominick (Jersey City, N.J.) was close behind with seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AIC got on the board first when Prince Olubakinda found Kyle Boyer-Tucker for an 11-yard touchdown reception with just under five minutes to play in the first quarter.
  • Ostrowsky then hooked up with Swain-Price for the duo's first points as Owls on a seven-yard touchdown pass to start the second quarter.
  • Both teams missed their point-after attempts to send the game to a 6-6 tie at halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, AIC converted on a pair of touchdowns as Jayson Demild completed passes to Kequan Jamison and Jonas Espinal to give the Yellow Jackets a 19-6 lead.
  • Ostrowsky then led the Owls on a 10-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard pass to Swain-Price, highlighted by a 23-yard run for Ostrowsky and a 22-yard pass to Jordan Knight, who also ran for 15 yards on the drive.
  • Southern held AIC to a four-and-out on its final possession before the Owls regained the ball with less than two minutes to play. Ostrowsky moved the Owls down-field after connecting with four different receivers on the drive before Izaiah Sanders (Stratford, Conn.) was taken down at AIC's 1-yard line. Facing a 4th-and-goal situation, Ostrowsky was denied on the keeper before AIC ran the final eight seconds off the clock.

NOTES
  • Ostrowsky also accumulated 23 yards on the ground to give him 305 total yards for the day, the most for an Owls' player since Ray Catapano went for 351 total yards (300 passing, 51 rushing) against New Haven on Sept. 29, 2017.
  • Ostrowsky's 282 passing yards are also the most for a Southern quarterback since Catapano's performance against the Chargers.
  • Ostrowsky's passing yards were the most for a SCSU freshman quarterback in a single game since Robert Nittolo threw for 357 yards against Assumption on Oct. 17, 2015.
  • Chung's 12 receptions were the most for the Owls since Devante Jenkins had 11 against Bentley on Sept. 19, 2015.
  • His 137 receiving yards were also the most for a SCSU wide receiver since Jenkins' 137 against LIU-Post on Oct. 15, 2016.
  • Swain-Prince also became the first Owls receiver to catch two touchdown passes in a game since Zhyaire Fernandes had a pair against Gannon on Sept. 2, 2017.
  • The last time Southern featured eight different receivers to record a reception was Sept. 15, 2018 against New Haven.
  • Jordan Knight (Windsor, Conn.) had a season-high 12 carries, totaling 38 yards for a 3.2 yard-per-carry average. The Owls rushed 34 times for 94 yards with Jonmichael Bivona (Stamford, Conn.) totaling 33 yards on 12 carries and Ostrowsky running for 23 yards on 10 carries.
