Women's Soccer Falls To SNHU In Overtime

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team lost to Southern New Hampshire, 2-1 in overtime, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, Southern drops to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the NE10 while Southern New Hampshire improves to 5-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.

Johanna Wahlen (Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) scored the Owls' only goal on the afternoon, after a goal scored earlier in the game was waved off. For Southern New Hampshire, Allyson Patterson scored the game-tying goal and Shae Roys potted the game-winner with Syndey Carney setting up both plays.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It appeared that Wahlen scored the game's first goal when she blasted a shot past SNHU goalkeeper Hannah Rose, but the goal was waved off when Julia Alicea was whistled for a foul after getting tangled in the box with a Penmen defender.
  • With less than nine minutes to play in regulation, Kelly Lamb played the ball up field to Wahlen, who turned and passed to Meagan Kelley who sent it back to Wahlen who took a dribble and then blasted a shot to the opposite top corner to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • Less than a second later, Carney fed the ball to the top of the box to Patterson who turned and volleyed it over Owls keeper Allie Smith to tie the game.
  • With less than a minute left in overtime, Roys snuck in behind the Owls' defense and took a pass from Carney at the top of the box. Her shot looked to be traveling wide but took a bounce and tucked inside the far post.

NOTES
  • With the loss, the Owls drop their first home contest of the season.
  • Wahlen's goal was her second of the year, and her second in as many games after converting in the Owls' tie against Assumption earlier this week.

UP NEXT
The Owls look to get back on track with a non-conference matchup against Queens on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. Southern will then play its next five games on the road before returning home to host New Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
