Women's Soccer Upsets Defending National Champions In Season Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H.- The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team upset the defending Division II champions and No. 2 ranked University of Bridgeport in their season opener at the Penmen Classic hosted by Southern New Hampshire University. The Owls open the season at 1-0, while the Purple Knights start the season at 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior forward Rossella Graniero (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the game during the 18th minute of play. 
  • Graniero's goal was the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • Graduate student Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) made seven saves as the goalkeeper. 
  • The Owls opened the season with a shutout win for the first time since 2012, when they beat Philadelphia University 1-0. 
  • The Owls won their season opening game for the first time since 2014, when they beat LIU Post 2-1 in overtime.

Following the Owls' season-opening win against Bridgeport, Southern will play Saint Thomas Aquinas College in Manchester, N.H.. as part of the Penmen Classic on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.
