Women's Soccer Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-0

Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 win against St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference matchup at the SNHU Tournament in Manchester, N.H. With the win, Southern improves to 2-0-0 through its opening weekend while St. Thomas Aquinas drops to 0-2-0.

Kelly Lamb (Ledyard, Conn.) factored into both Owls' goals, assisting Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.) before scoring late in regulation. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) posted her second-straight shutout, denying the Spartans on their lone shot on goal of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls got on the board on a play started by Johanna Wahlen (Karlsruhe, Germany), who controlled the ball with a defender on her hip, before feeding Lamb on an overlapping run down the sideline. Lamb then sent a cross-pass to the box for D'Amico who shrugged off a defender and potted her first of the season.
  • In the closing minutes of play, Wahlen and Lamb played the give-and-go to the left of the Spartans' goal before Lamb buried her first goal of the season to the opposite post to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
NOTE
  • Smith now owns a shutout streak of 180 minutes after blanking the Spartans as well as nationally-ranked Bridgeport on Friday.
  • The longest shutout streak to start a season was set by Jacquelyn Frede in 2011 who posted seven-straight clean sheets before allowing a goal in the 68th minute in her eighth game of the year to give her a run of 698:20 minutes.
  • The last time Southern posted back-to-back wins to start the season was 2012, while 2011 saw the Owls start the year with back-to-back shutouts.
  • The current squad has some work to do in that area as the 2011 team didn't allow a goal until its eighth game.
  • D'Amico's goal was her first of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Lamb goal was the first of her career, while her assist on D'Amico's goal was her third of her career.
  • Wahlen also picks up the first point of the season.
