Gymnastics Finishes Second in Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics program finished second out of four teams in the Owls' 2020 home-opening quad meet at the James Moore Field House. Cornell won the event with a score of 189.650, followed by the Owls with a score of 187.025 ahead of Brockport in third at 186.450 with Springfield in fourth place at 185.800. 

Hannah Stalhbrodt (Cicero, N.Y.) posted the highest all-around score in the field with a final tally of 38.300. Cassidy Girolamo (Newington, Conn.) was second at 37.250 for her first all-around score of the season. Stahlbrodt led the Owls in three of the four events on the afternoon including second-place finishes on the vault and bars and a third-place finish on the floor. 

VAULT
Four Owls posted season-best scores on the vault, as Stahlbrodt scored a 9.725 for second place followed by Emily Balasco (Seekonk, Mass.) in sixth at 9.625. Girolamo was close behind at 9.600 while Alexandra Lesperance (Valrico, Fla.) posted a 9.525.

  UNEVEN PARALLEL BARS
Jackie Kutcher (West Newbury, Mass.) led Southern on the bars wiht a 9.450, while Girolamo was close-behind at 9.375 for sixth place. 

BALANCE BEAM
Stahlbrodt tallied another personal-best score on the balance beam in a tie for second-place with Owls' newcomer Bianca Leon (Miami, Fla.) at 9.775. Leon's score was her first counting score of her collegiate career in her first career meet. 

FLOOR
Stahlbrodt finished third with a 9.650 while Keylea Brothers (Dry Ridge, Ky.) was 10th wiht a 9.475. 

UP NEXT
Southern is back in action when it competes at Yale on Saturday, Feb. 1 in a tri-meet that also features Bridgeport. The Owls will face Bridgeport again on Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Purple Knights' tri-meet that features Brown.

Prior to the start of the Owls' quad meet, Southern Connecticut, Brockport, Springfield and Cornell as well as all in attendance observed a moment of silence in honor of Melanie Coleman, the Owls' teammate who died tragically in Nov. 2019. The Owls meet also featured a tribute video and message of thanks from senior Isabella Antonangeli for the support that the team has received in this difficult time.
