NE10 Presidents Vote to Cancel Formal Winter Sports Conference Competition and Championships

12/15/2020 4:58:00 PM

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Given the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the region, the Northeast 10 Conference Council of Presidents voted on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to cancel formal regular season and championship competition in the Conference's seven winter sports.

"Once again, we're all disappointed with the situation that we're in," director of athletics Jay Moran said. "My heart goes out to our student-athletes who have worked hard to compete. In the end, this decision by the NE10 Council of Presidents came out of an abundance of caution with the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. We'll continue to work, as will the conference and all of our fellow NE10 schools, to get our student-athletes back into competition."

Southern Connecticut sports impacted by the NE10 President's vote include competition for men's and women's basketball, indoor track & field, and swimming & diving. SCSU Gymnastics' competition is also postponed as a result of winter sports cancellation.

The Council of Presidents and the entire NE10 community continue to work extensively in its prioritization of health and safety in its decision-making process in determining a return to competition. Southern Connecticut and the NE10 remain committed to supporting a return to play for NE10 competition in its 10 spring sports, whose 2020 seasons were canceled at the outset of the pandemic.

No decision has been made regarding the resumption of fall sports. A determination will be made in January.

While the Council has elected to cancel formal NE10 winter competition and championships in 2021, each NE10 member institution shall retain the autonomy to determine if it will engage in independent athletic contests this winter.

Team activities, practice and training opportunities and contests against outside competition will be determined and defined by each member institution but shall adhere to NCAA policies and state public health regulations.
