Women's Basketball Falls To New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a Northeast 10 Conference matchup against New Haven, 61-56, at Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls fall to 9-17 overall and 3-14 in the NE10 while the Chargers improve to 12-6 overall and 18-7 in conference play. 

Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) led Southern with 16 points, while redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) had 11 points and six rebounds. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) had 10 points and eight assists as well as two steals in the Owls' loss.


First Half
  • Southern held a 15-11 lead through the first 10 minutes of play, led by 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range, including a pair from Fressle. The back-and-forth first quarter featured four lead changes. 
  • The Owls pushed their lead to six points early in the second quarter before both teams traded buckets. With New Haven cutting the Owls' lead to a point, 17-16, just four minutes into the second frame, Southern responded with  a 5-0 run on a jumper by Paula Tattari (Kerava, Finland) and a three-point play by Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) to give Southern a 22-17 lead.
  • New Haven responded with a 5-0 run of its own before Kellner knocked a three to push Southern's lead back to three-points. New Haven's Camryn DeBose sunk a pair of free throws and Aurora Deshaies gave the Chargers the lead heading into the half, 26-25.

Second Half
  • Both teams came out cold to start the second half, as New Haven outscored the Owls, 11-5, to take a 37-30 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • New Haven increased its lead to eight points, 41-33, with 7:51 to play. Southern countered with an 8-4 run to cut the Chargers lead to 45-41 with 5:29 to play. The Owls' mini-run was highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Wheeler and Fressle.
  • After New Haven's Brie Pergola responded with a three from the right wing, Fressle answered on the other end with her third three-pointer of the game to pull Southern within four points.
  • Wheeler then knocked down a pair of free throws to make it one possession before Micah Womack banged home a three to push the Chargers' lead to five. Wheeler then came back down court and hung another three on New Haven to pull Southern within a basket with 40 seconds to play.
  • With the Owls in the double bonus, the Chargers converted on 10-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory on the road.

Notes
  • Fressle's 16 points came on the strength of 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.
  • The game was Fressle's fourth-straight games in double figures, while she is averaging 21.3 points per game during the run.
  • Kellner has now hit three three-pointers in three of her last four games. 
  • For Wheeler, she posted her 13th consecutive double-digit game while her eight assists are her most in a game since she totaled nine against Adelphi on Jan. 8 – a span of 10 games. The last player to score double-digit points in 13-straight games was Taylor McLaughlin during 2016-2017 season. McLaughlin recorded 13-straight games of double-digit points from Nov. 30, 2016 to Jan. 21, 2017.
  • Paula Tattari finished with six points in 15 minutes off the bench, converting on 3-of-5 from the floor.
  • The Owls' six three-pointers in the fourth quarter were its most in a single quarter this season.

Southern will host Saint Rose for its final regular-season home game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020. Prior to the start of the afternoon's game, Southern will honor Imani Wheeler, Aaliyah Walker and Paula Tattari as part of Senior Day.
