Wheeler Hits Career Milestone, Women's Basketball Falls To No. 10 Adelphi In Season Finale

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Senior Imani Wheeler recorded her 1,000th career point as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to No. 10 nationally-ranked Adelphi, 88-64 in its season finale at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Owls finish the season 10-17 overall and 4-14 in the Northeast 10, while the Panthers improve to 26-2 overall and 17-2 in the NE10.
 
In addition to hitting her 1,000th career point, Wheeler finished with 17 total points, seven assists and one steal. Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Freshman Amani Boston (Dorcester, Mass.) recorded a career-high 18 points and grabbed five boards.

How It Happened

First Half
  • Adelphi opened the game on an 14-3 run. Both teams traded baskets for the second half of the quarter, but the Panthers would take a seven-point lead at the end of ten minutes.
  • Southern came out firing with an 11-2 run in the beginning of the second quarter. A jumper from Fressle gave the Owls their first lead at the 6:54 mark. Adelphi responded in the second half of the quarter finishing with a 12-5 run and an eight-point lead heading into halftime.

Second Half
  • The Panthers took charge in the opening minutes of the third quarter igniting a 14-5 run to take a 17-point lead midway through. The Owls attempted to chip away at their lead, but Adelphi's offense continued their surge helping them to a 15-point lead at the end of 30 minutes played. Wheeler and Fressle combined for 15 of the Owls 18 points in the quarter.
  • In the final quarter of play, Adelphi began with a 10-3 run extending their lead to 22-points. At the 2:22 mark of the fourth quarter, Wheeler snagged her 16th point of the game and 1,000th of her career off a free throw. Both teams traded baskets in the final two minutes, but the nationally-ranked Panthers went on to capture the home victory. 

Notes
  • Imani Wheeler caps her collegiate career with 1,001 career points with 17 against Adelphi. She moves into 23rd in program history in career points. Wheeler has now scored in double digits in 15-straight games – the longest scoring run for the Owls this season.
  • Amani Boston finished with 18 points against Adelphi surpassing her previous career-high of 15 points. That high was set in the Owls second game of the season against Bloomfield back on Nov. 10, 2019.
  • In addition, Wheeler has been distributing the ball at an impressive rate with seven-or-more assists in four of her last five games while averaging 6.8 assists per game in that time. She sits seventh all-time in program history in career-assists.
  • With 85 steals this season, Imani Wheeler is now sixth all-time in single season steals and caps her career sitting sixth all-time in career steals.
