Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Queens, 12-5 and 10-5

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Queens, taking the first game, 12-5, before completing the twin bill with a 10-5 win in the night cap. With the sweep, Southern improves to 6-3-1 overall while Queens drops to 4-7 on the year.

Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with five RBI and three runs scored as well as two stolen bases, while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) was 3-for-7 with a three-run home run, five RBI and three runs scored.  On the mound, Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.)) picked up the win after giving up one earned run on three hits while striking out nine over six innings. In the second game, Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) gave up two hits over five innings while striking out 10 while allowing just one earned run.

GAME 1
  • Southern used an eight-run 2nd inning, keyed by seven hits, and highlighted by a pair of two-run singles by Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) to take an 8-1 lead.
  • The Owls tacked on two mores in the 3rd and also scored once in the 5th and 6th to take a 12-1 lead.
  • Queens mounted a comeback in the seventh when it scored three runs – all unearned – off of reliever Brenden Ebert (Berlin, Conn.). Ebert held Queens to just three hits in two innings of work without giving up an earned run. Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) also pitched the 9th to close-out the win for the Owls.
  • Zambito was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Zach Bedryzcuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. DeMartino and Jack Drewry also drove in two wins in the Game 1 win while John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.), Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) and Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) all scored twice for the Owls.
GAME 2
  • Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first at-bats before Ferrett delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the game.
  • Queens took the lead once-again in the 2nd inning, 3-2, before the Owls' bats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning. Cloutier singled to lead-off the inning before stealing second and scoring on a single by Bedryzcuk. After Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) and Redahan were hit by a pitch, DeMartino drove in O'Toole and Bedryzcuk with a two-run single before Ferrett followed with a three-run homer to give the Owls an 8-3 lead.
  • Redahan scored on a passed ball in the fourth before Bedryzcuk scored on a ground ball by DeMartino to give the Owls a 10-3 lead.
  • Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) pitched a perfect 6th before the Knights manufactured two runs in their final at-bat.
NOTES
  • Ferrett now owns a team-leading eight-game hitting streak, while his five RBI in the second game are the most in a game this season for the Owls.
  • Ferrett is hitting .400 (12-30) with a team-leading 12 RBI as well as nine runs scored in the stretch.
  • DeMartino now leads the Owls with 12 hits in 10 games and is hitting at a .375 (11-40) clip.
  • Redahan has scored five runs in his last three games to give him a team-leading 15 for the season. After being hit by a pitch twice in the second game, Redehan now leads the team with seven and also boasts a.545 on-base percentage.
  • With a hit in each game of the doubleheader, Drewry has now hit safely in six-straight games.
  • Southern boasts four players with an OPS (on-base-plus-slugging percentage) of 1.000 of higher: Bedryczuk (1.398), Drewry (1.113), Redahan (1.045) and Ferrett (1.022).
  • As a team, Southern is averaging 8.4 runs per game while hitting .287 (95-331) as a team with a .401 team on-base percentage to go-along with a .396 slugging percentage.
  • White improves to 2-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.38. Last year's Northeast 10 Pitcher Rookie of the Year has allowed six earned runs over 16 innings while striking out 24.
  • Nemchek improves to 1-1, while also lowering his ERA to 4.20 as he's allowed seven earned runs in 15 innings while striking out 21.
UP NEXT
Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 10 when it travels to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on Mercy at 3 p.m. The Owls then travel to Florida to take on Bentley on Mar. 13-14, Molloy on Mar. 15, Adelphi on Mar. 16 and Lynn on Mar. 18. The Owls next home dates land on Mar. 27-29 with a three-day, four-game NE10 series against Le Moyne at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn.
