Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Burr Nets Penalty Kick Game-Winner, Owls Defeat Franklin Pierce, 1-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Kelsey Burr (Wallingford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to lift the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to victory over Franklin Pierce, 1-0, at Jess Dow Field. The Owls improved to 4-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NE10, while the Ravens fall to 6-3-2 overall and 3-3-2.
 
How It Happened
  • The first half saw scoreless action between both squads, and each team mustered up six shots. 
  • In the 71st minute, a handball was called inside the box that sent the Owls to the line. Burr took the penalty kick and slotted it to the bottom left corner for her third goal of the season.
  • In the 87th minute, graduate student Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) made a diving save to keep SCSU on top and secure the conference victory at home. 
     
 
Notes
  • Kelsey Burr became the first Southern player to score a goal in three consecutive since Johanna Wahlen Sept. 5-Sept. 12, 2018.
  • Burr became the first Southern player to score a game-winning goal in back-to-back games since LeAnn DiSisto Oct. 11 - Oct. 15, 2014.
  • Allie Smith recorded her 11th career shutout and third of the season.
  • Smith has allowed one goal or fewer in nine of her 10 games played this season. 
  • Southern defeated Franklin Pierce for the first time since Sept. 24, 2016, shut out the Ravens for the first time since Sept. 20, 2014.
