Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball Past Saint Michael's, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated Saint Michael's College, 3-0, at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls improved to 19-8 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast 10, while the Purple Knights fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the NE10.

Junior Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) hit .769 with 10 kills, seven digs, and one block.  Graduate student Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) hit .643 with nine kills and two service aces. Sophomore Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) recorded 22 assists through two sets, while senior Heliceliz Rivera (Corozal, Puerto Rico) picked up 11 assists, three digs, and two blocks. Senior Erika Benson had eight kills and two blocks.

How It Happened
  • Saint Michael's started out strong with a 6-1 run to open the first set. Southern Connecticut responded with a 4-0 run and came within one. After the Purple Knights scored three-straight points, the Owls countered with a commanding 20-2 run to finish the set, 25-11.
  • Set two saw the Owls continue their offensive firepower. Southern limited Saint Michael's to single-digit scoring points and defeated the Purple Knights by 16, 25-9.
  • The Purple Knights began to find a rhythm at the beginning of set three as they outscored Southern, 7-5. The Owls picked up the next nine-straight points on Jamie Allen's serve, which was enough to ward off the Purple Knights. Southern closed out the match with a 25-16 victory.
 
Player Notes
  • Gabriela Gaibur's .769 hitting percentage is tied for the second most in a single game in program history (min. 7 kills). Abby Epstein also had a .769 hitting percentage this season, on Sept. 3 against Dominican.
  • Gaibur recorded her 18th game this season with at least 10 kills. 
  • Taylor Jones has recorded double-digit assists in every single one of her 24 appearances this season.
  • Jones now has 19 games this season with at least 20 assists. 
  • Heliceliz Rivera now has recorded nine double-digit assist games this season, and her third straight. 
  • Rivera recorded a career-high two blocks. 
  • Erika Benson recorded her 17th game this season with multiple blocks. 
  • Payton Reis recorded a career-high two blocks. 
  
Team Notes
  • Southern has recorded 12 sweeps this season, their most since 2018. 
  • Southern's 14 wins at home are also their most since 2018.
  • Southern has won five consecutive games, all sweeps, against Saint Michael's dating back to 2016.
