Softball Snaps Adelphi's Winning Streak, Splits Twin Bill

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a pair of Northeast 10 games with Adelphi, an 8-4 win and a 1-0 loss. The Owls move to 9-7 overall and 6-6 in the NE10, while the Panthers move to 13-5 overall and 11-3 in the NE10.

With a game two victory, the Owls snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Panthers dating back to April 8, 2016 and snapped Adelphi's current six-game winning streak.

Sophomore Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) threw a solid performance in the circle and contributed offensively for the Owls. In 31 batters faced, Perucki struck out eight and allowed five hits en route to earning her fourth win of the season. At the plate, she tallied her first career home run with a three-run blast in the first inning.

Junior Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 3-for-4 in game two, including a home run and a double with three RBI and two runs scored. Graduate student Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) went 1-for-3 including a walk, three stolen bases and three runs scored, while freshman Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Game 1: Adelphi 1, Southern Connecticut 0
  • It was a quiet six innings of play until Adelphi broke the deadlock in the seventh inning scoring the eventual game-winning run off a sacrifice fly.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 8, Adelphi 4
  • The Owls bounced back after their single-hit performance in game one as Buscetto opened the game reaching base on a fielding error. After Buscetto stole second, Dumont singled to center field to move Buscetto over to third. In the next at bat, Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Buscetto eventually scored the Owls first run of the game on a groundout, while Dumont scored on an error. Perucki stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run home run to give the Owls a commanding five-run lead in just the first inning.
  • Southern's bats remained hot in the second inning with Dumont knocking a RBI double to right center to extend the Owls lead to six.
  • Dumont was after it again in the fourth inning as she blasted a two-run home run to center field to put SCSU up 8-0.
  • Adelphi responded in the fifth inning, collecting three runs off two hits. The Panthers chipped in a late-game RBI single in the seventh inning, but the Owls early scoring frenzy was enough to hold off Adelphi, 8-4.

Game Notes
  • Sara Buscetto collected her 15th, 16th and 17th stolen bases of the season against Adelphi on April 13. Buscetto now has 62 career stolen bases, second all-time in SCSU history and two stolen bases shy of tying Brittany Bucko (64), who currently sits first all-time.
  • Jessica Perucki collected her fourth win of the season in the circle and her first collegiate home run at the plate. The last pitcher to collect a win and hit a home run in the same game was Audrey Dolloff on March 29, 2016 in a 12-4 victory against Dowling College.
  • Adelphi had not allowed any home runs this season until Jessica Perucki and Jacqueline Dumont both hit home runs in game two.
  • The last time two different Owls hit home runs in the same game was on February 16, 2019 when both Jacqueline Dumont and Kelsey White notched home runs.
  • The last time two different Owls hit home runs in the same game at home was on April 21, 2018 off the bats of Sara Buscetto and Delaney Turner.
  • Game two saw the most runs Adelphi has allowed this season and the most the Owls have scored against Adelphi since their last win against the Panthers on April 8, 2016, when they scored 11.
  • The last time Adelphi allowed eight hits in a game was in its last loss against New Haven in a 7-2 defeat on April 3, 2021.
