Baseball Hosts American International On Apr. 17-18

Southern Connecticut State University baseball will host American International College for a four-game Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division series on Apr. 17-18. The Owls and Yellow Jackets will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 17 followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 18 with both set for a 12 p.m. start. Southern enters the weekend with a record of 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 Conference while AIC sits at 4-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Update To Spectator Policy
Southern Connecticut State University Athletics will allow spectators at all home baseball, softball and women's lacrosse games, beginning on Saturday, Apr. 10, 2021.
 
Families and fans of Southern Connecticut baseball, softball and women's lacrosse should not expect similar allowances in attendance at other Northeast 10 Conference venues. The decision to allow attendance at Southern Connecticut's home venues for baseball, softball and women's lacrosse was made exclusively by the University with permission to do so by the NE10. The Conference has not mandated that any school allow spectators at events, but has allowed schools to set their own spectator attendance policy.
 
All individuals attending baseball, softball and women's lacrosse games will be expected to wear masks during the contest as well as adhering to social distancing of six feet between all individuals, including those in their travel parties. Families and fans for visiting teams will not be permitted at this ti

The Last Time They Met
Southern won the last meeting between the two teams – 9-2 on Apr. 23, 2019.
  • Brandon White improved to 5-0 on the season after holding the Yellow Jackets offense to two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings.
  • Connor Redahan was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Scouting The Yellow Jackets
  • AIC is 4-10 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast 10 Conference entering the weekend.
  • The Yellow Jackets lost eight of their first nine games of the season but have won three of their last five games.
  • AIC and Pace split a doubleheader on Mar. 14, winning the first game, 10-2, before dropping the second game, 8-4.
  • Alejandro Mosquera leads AIC with a .382 (13-34) average with three home runs and seven RBI and has reached base in 12-straight games.
  • Brandon Gaul checks in a .311 with a team-best 14 hits and is tied for the team lead with eight RBI and nine runs scored.
  • Angel Mendez is 11-for-50 (.220) with eight RBI and nine runs scored.
  • On the mound, Joe Pepe is 1-1 with a 7.11 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 19 innings.
  • Joe Kemlage leads the team with 33 strikeouts, across 21 1/3 innings, and is 0-3 with a 7.17 ERA.
  • Joe Oliver has appeared in five games, all out of the bullpen, and sports a team-best 1.59 ERA with one earned run allowed in 5 2/3.
Owls Notes
  • Southern is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Pace on Saturday, Mar. 10, taking the first game, 8-4, before following a 10-4 win in the nightcap.
  • Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) collected five hits in the doubleheader and drove in three runs.
  • Drewry was named to the NE10 Baseball honor roll this week after his big weekend against the Setters. He joins Tony Zambito and Andrew Eng as Owls to received conference recognition this season.
  • Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected three hits while scoring four runs and driving in four more. Zambito also record three stolen bases on the day. 
  • Zambito's three stolen bases give him 47 for his career.
  • Zambito was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and is now 7-for-15 in his last three games with six runs scored and six RBI.
  • Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) also had four hits on the day.
  • Walker is off to a hot start to the season, currently batting .533 (8-15) with four doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. He has recorded multiple hits in three of the five games he's appeared in and is currently riding a three-game hitting streak.
  • Tommy Hughes and Pete Phillips picked up wins on the mound, while Brandon White and Zach Rodgers both recorded saves.
  • Andrew Eng homered in the first game of the series, marking the fourth-straight game to do so. He becomes the first player in program history to homer in his first four games as an Owl.
  • The last Owls' player to hit a home run in three-straight games was Jason Oliverio in 2000 against New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University) in a doubleheader followed by a home run against Mercy in the Owls' next game.
  • Drewry owns the Owls' longest hitting streak with a hit in all five games this season. His 5-for-7 showing against Pace bumps his season average to .444 (8-18).
  • Dating back to last season, Drewry owns an 11-game hitting streak and a 15-game streak of safely reaching base.
  • Farina has now hit safely in three-straight games, scoring five runs and driving in four more in the span.
  • Southern is now 3-0 at home this season, and 5-0-1 over the last two seasons with last loss at The Ballpark at SCSU coming on May 2, 2019.
  • Southern is hitting .314 (50-159) through five games with 16 extra-base hits, while also drawing 28 walks for a .450 on-base percentage.
