Baseball Splits Doubleheader At New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at New Haven, taking the first game, 14-6 before dropping the nightcap, 11-4. Southern goes to 5-6 overall and 4-6 in the NE10SW while New Haven moves to 5-5 overall and 5-3 in NE10 play.

Brandon Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 6-for-9 in the doubleheader, with three hits in each game, while also hitting his team-leading fifth home run and driving in five runs on the day. Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 4-for-6 with three runs scored while also reaching base on a walk and was hit twice by a pitch. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also collected four hits, all coming in the first game, with four RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, Spencer Fox (Manchester, Conn.) earned the win after holding New Haven scoreless across 4 2/3 innings in relief. Fox scattered a pair of hits while striking out a career-best seven. Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) also tossed a scoreless, hitless inning in relief with two strikeouts.

GAME 1
Billy Sullivan was 4-for-6 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored while Andrew Eng was 3-for-5 with a single, double and home run with four RBI and three runs scored. The Owls' 14 runs match their season-best against Felician while their 16 hits were the most in a single game this year.
  • Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Billy Sullivan singled followed by a two-run homer by Andrew Eng.
  • New Haven answered in the bottom half of the inning as they pushed three runs across to take a 3-2 lead. The Chargers made it 4-2 with another run in the 4th.
  • In the 6th, Southern exploded for six runs to take an 8-4 lead. Mike Ferrett led off the inning with a double off the top of the fence in left-center field before moving to third on a single by Jack Drewry. Izaiah Walker then drove in Ferrett to pull the Owls within a run with a double to center field.
  • After Derrick Jagello walked to load the bases, Tyshaun Diaz's deep fly ball to right field scored Drewry. Josh Wettemann drew a walk and Tony Zambito was hit by a pitch before Sullivan ripped a double down the left-field line to score Jagello and Wetteman before a chopper between the mound and first baseman allowed Eng to reach with an infield single and Zambito to score from third.
  • In the 8th, Zambito walked to lead off the inning before scoring from first on a double by Sullivan. Eng then followed with a double that missed clearing the fence by two feet to score Sullivan and give the Owls a 10-4 lead.
  • Ferrett then walked and moved to second on a groundout by Drewry before Walker drove in Eng with a sacrifice fly. Jagello then picked up his first career RBI with a single to center field to plate Ferrett and give the Owls an eight-run lead, 12-4.
  • In the 9th, Southern pushed two more runs across when Sullivan poked his third double of the day before Eng worked a walk. A wild pitch to Mike Ferrett allowed Sullivan to score from second and Eng to move to third before Ferrett drove in Eng to give the Owls a ten-run lead.
  • New Haven managed to score two runs off of Ferrett who was making his season debut in relief on the mound.
GAME 2
Eng was 3-for-4 with a RBI and a runs scored while Zambito was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mike Ferrett and Derrick Jagello also drove in runs.
  • New Haven got on the board first in the night cap, pushing across three runs in the first inning, all with two outs.
  • Southern answered in the top of the 2nd Zach Healey picked-up a two-out single before Jagello drove in him in with a double for his second RBI of the afternoon.
  • In the 3rd, Eng singled to right field with two outs before Ferrett drove him in with a double to cut UNH's lead to 3-2.
  • UNH took an 8-2 lead with a two-run bottom of the 3rd followed by a three-run 4th inning.
  • In the 5th, Zambito collected his second hit of the game before stealing second moving to third on a wild pitch. A ground ball by Sullivan drove Zambito in to cut UNH's lead to 8-3.
  • After UNH pushed its lead to 11-3, Eng drove in Kevin Lucey with is fifth RBI of the doubleheader.
NOTES
  • Tony Zambito extended his team-best hitting streak to nine games with a hit in both games of the doubleheader. Zambito's streak is the longest of his career.
  • During that nine-game stretch, Zambito is hitting .545 (18-33) with 12 runs scored, seven RBI and three doubles, as well as eight stolen bases in 10 attempts.
  • Zambito now leads the team in average (.500), runs scored (14), hits (20), stolen bases (10) and hit-by-pitches (four).
  • Billy Sullivan became the first player since Nolan Cloutier on Feb. 23, 20219 to collect three doubles in one game.
  • Sullivan has been on a tear as of late, hitting .412 (7-17) with six RBI and four runs scored in his last four games.
  • Spencer Fox extended his scoreless-innings streak to 12 2/3 with a dazzling performance in the first game of the Owls' twin bill. Fox also recorded a season-best seven strikeouts after entering the game with four in his first four outings of the season.
  • Fox's relief victory was his first career win. Fox has now appeared in five games and team-high 14 innings and lowers his team-leading ERA to 1.93 on the year.
  • Andrew Eng also poked his fifth home run of the season in the first game while also driving in four runs to give him a team-best 19 for the year.
  • Mike Ferrett was 3-for-8 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Ferrett entered last Sunday's doubleheader against AIC hitless in 26 at-bats. Since then, he is hitting .385 (5-13) with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored in a four-game hitting streak.
  • Ferrett also made his season debut on the mound in the first game of the doubleheader and allowed two unearned runs in one inning of work.

Southern and New Haven meet again on Saturday, Apr. 24 with a 12 p.m. set for the first pitch of the doubleheader.
