NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team fell to the University of New Haven, 7-0 and 13-1, in Northeast 10 Conference action. The Owls move to 6-6 on the season and 3-5 in the NE10, while the Chargers move to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the NE10.
Game 1: New Haven 7, Southern Connecticut 0
- New Haven got on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.
- The Chargers added to their lead with a two-run home run to left field.
- Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) saved a deep shot hit to the right field fence in the fifth to keep the Charger's lead to three. Later in the inning, New Haven's Nathali Simpson doubled to right-center field, scoring two runs and increasing the Chargers lead to five.
- In the sixth inning, the Chargers ace in the circle, Ava Fitzmaurice, blasted a solo home run to left-center field to increase their lead to six.
- The seventh inning saw New Haven add another run with Simpson at it again. She hit a hard ball up the middle that brought around pinch runner, Halle Fredrick from second.
Game 2: New Haven 13, Southern Connecticut 1
- New Haven picked up where they left off in game one with four early runs in the first inning.
- The Chargers chipped in another run in the second inning.
- In the fifth inning, sophomore Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) hit a deep double to right-center field to try and flare the Owls' offense. Perucki eventually scored on a groundout from Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.).
- New Haven responded with eight runs in the sixth inning and followed those up with a solid 1-2-3 inning to finish out the game, 13-1.
Game Notes
- Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) collected her 13th stolen base of the season against New Haven. Buscetto now has 58 career stolen bases, second all-time in SCSU history. She is six stolen bases shy of tying Brittany Bucko (64), who currently sits first all-time.
