Baseball Heads To AIC For NE10 Championship First Round On Tuesday, May 11

The 5th-seeded Southern Connecticut Owls will head to Springfield, Mass. to take on 4th-seeded American International College in a Northeast 10 Conference Championship First Round game on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 3 p.m. at Richard F. Bedard Field. The Owls stand at 8-9 overall and 7-9 in the NE10 while AIC completed the regular season at 11-18 overall and 10-11 in conference play.

THE OWLS ALL-TIME IN THE NE10 TOURNAMENT 
  • Southern owns an all-time record of 13-21 in 34 NE10 tournament games all-time, reaching four championships finals.  
  • Southern ended a streak of five-straight NE10 tournament losses when it shocked top-seeded Adelphi on its home field in the 2019 tournament.  
  • All-time, Southern is 5-7 in 12 NE10 First Round Games.  
  • This is the first postseason meeting between Southern Connecticut and American International, all-time.  
  • The Owls have made four NE10 Championship finals (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008) finishing as the runner-up each year. 
THE OWLS ALL-TIME AGAINST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL 
  • Tuesday's matchup will be the 100th game played between the two teams all-time.  
  • Southern Connecticut is 62-37 in 99 meetings between the two teams, dating back to the first meeting between the two teams in 1958, a 5-4 win for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Southern owns the longest winning streak in the all-time series totaling 15-straight victories against the Yellow Jackets from 2007 through Apr. 28, 2012. 
  • From 2016 through 2018, Southern won eight of the nine meetings between the two teams. 
  • Southern is 22-7 all-time at American International.  
  • AIC took three of four games against Southern Connecticut earlier this season.
  • For the series, Tony Zambito was 7-for-12 with three doubles and three runs scored.
  • Andrew Eng drove in four runs in the series to bring his season total to a team-best 14 in nine games played.
  • Josh Wettemann was 3-for-6 in two games in the series with a double, triple, one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Billy Sullivan collected four hits in the series while also driving in three runs, and picked up an outfield assist in his first game in right field for the Owls.
  • Tommy Hughes pitched well in relief against the Yellow Jackets, allowing one baserunner in three innings pitched while also picking up his first career save in the Owls' 3-1 win.  
SCOUTING THE AIC YELLOW JACKETS 
  • Matt Krause leads the team with a .292 average (28-96) with three home runs, seven doubles, 13 RBI and 17 runs scored.  
  • Dalton Quinn leads the team with four home runs and 24 RBI. 
  • Matt Costanza has a team-high 22 runs scored. 
  • On the mound, Joe Pepe has started a team-high nine games and carries a 3-3 record with a 4.83 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched.  
  • Joe Kemlage has struck-out a team-high 71 batters in 41 1/3 innings and is 1-4 with a 5.88 ERA.  
SCOUTING THE SCSU OWLS
  • Tony Zambito had an incredible regular season for the Owls as he led the club with a .492 average (31-63) while leading the team in hits (31), runs scored (19), on-base percentage (.556) and stolen bases (16).
  • Zambito enters Tuesday's game on a 15-game hitting streak, the longest since Connor Redahan had a 16-game streak in 2019. Zambito has also reached base safely in 28 consecutive games.
  • He also leads the team with 10 multiple-hit games and has one of the Owls' two four-hit outings.
  • Andrew Eng finished the regular season hitting .293 (17-58) while leading the team with seven home runs and 28 RBI, as well as a .707 slugging percentage.
  • Eng's 17 runs scored rank second to Zambito's 19.
  • His 10 extra-base hits also led the Owls.
  • He led the team with eight multiple-RBI games, including five with three-or-more.
  • Izaiah Walker batted .298 (14-47) for the year to go-along with five doubles, nine RBI and 10 runs scored.
  • On the mound, Zach Rodgers will get the ball against the Yellow Jackets. Rodgers is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA and has held opposing offenses to six earned runs in 17 2/3 innings of work. He's also struck-out 13 batters against four walks for the season.
  • Against AIC, Rodgers held the Yellow Jackets to one run on seven hits over six innings in a 3-1 win, but took a no-decision.
  • Spencer Fox saw a 15-inning scoreless innings streak end against Le Moyne this weekend, but heads into the week with a 2-0 record a 2.20 ERA. Fox has logged 16 1/3 innings in six appearances and has allowed just four earned runs out of the bullpen. Fox also has 14 strikeouts.
  • Tommy Hughes has emerged as the Owls' closer as he is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this year. Hughes is also 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA with four earned runs allowed in 12 innings with 13 strikeouts.
  • Hughes has allowed a run in his last five appearances, while also giving up just three hits over those eight innings while striking out five.
