SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost to American International College,11-6, in a Northeast 10 Conference Championship First Round matchup in Springfield, Mass. With the loss, the Owls' season ends at 8-10.
Senior Mike DeMartino (New Haven,Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double while freshman Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, Conn.) also homered and doubled for the Owls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the top of the 2nd, Mike DeMartino connected on a 3-and-2 pitch and blasted a two-out home run over the right centerfield wall to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
- In the 3rd, Chad Fedeli led-off the inning with his first career home run. The Owls' shortstop hit a fly ball to right field that carried to give Southern a 2-0 lead.
- Tony Zambito followed with a single through the left side of the infield before Andrew Eng hit a towering shot to center field for a two-run homer to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
- After AIC took advantage of two Owls errors to cut Southern's lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the 3rd, DeMartino singled through the left side of the infield with one out in the top of the 4th. Fedeli then drove in DeMartino with a two-out single to give the Owls a 5-3 lead.
- With the wind playing a factor, AIC benefitted from a fly ball to right that floated over the wall to cut the Owls' lead to 5-4 in the 4th.
- In the 5th, AIC took a 7-5 lead off of some timely hitting by the Yellow Jackets, knocking Zach Rodgers out of the game in favor of Spencer Fox.
- AIC increased it's lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the 8th. In the top of the 9th, Derek Jagello led-off with a pinch-hit double before Fedeli singled for his third hit of the day. After Zambito bunted both runners over, Farina walked and Eng was hit by a pitch to force a run in and cut AIC's to 11-6.
NOTES
- DeMartino's home run was the ninth of his career and his second career postseason home run. He also homered in the Owls' NE10 First Round game at Adelphi in 2019.
- Zambito's 3rd inning single extended his team-leading hitting streak to 16 games and his on-base streak to 29 games.
- Eng's home run in the 3rd inning was his team-best eighth of the year, while he also pushed his season RBI total to 30.
- The game marked the first time the Owls featured three different players homer in the same game since May 7, 2019 when DeMartino, Nolan Cloutier and Tyler Criscuolo homered in the Owls' 9-6 win at Adelphi in the 2019 NE10 Tournament First Round.
